ah its probably due to your resolution not being in the 16/9 or 16/10 formats (not widescreen)
the game should let you change the screen resolution in the graphics settings but not sure if itll help

Is it supposed to be for 16:9 screens? Mine (obvious by my resolution) is like a 4:3 or 5:4 (i forget which)

yea apparently its only widescreen
on the wiki it says "16:9; other aspect ratios are letterboxed." http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Mirror's_Edge#Video_settings

You should check your GPU driver settings, there may be an option to scale the image.
