Mirror's Edge

Mirror's Edge

Unplayable on Steam Deck
I tried Making Mirror’s Edge on the Steam Deck today. The game ran beautifully unto the first chapter and then the frame rate tanks into the single digits. It was fluctuating wildly. What gives, the game is listed as ‘Playable’ by Valve.

wild guess, probably physx's fault? Try turning it off in the video options

Yep. I think that’s it. Interestingly i noticed that a torn fabric sheet is now missing from the level.

Yep. The Hardware PhysX acceleration setting also controls the presence of things such as detailed and wind-like dynamic cloth simulation on banners, the existence of semitransparent tarp and plastic barrier entities that also have cloth simulation tied to them, broken glass and concrete particles, bullet impact particles, dynamically simulated glass breakage deformation or whatever, maybe fog particles, and so much more.

The corresponding driver dependency needed for this game is the PhysX Legacy Driver here: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/physx/physx-9-13-0604-legacy-driver/ , but it obviously cannot be installed on the Steam Deck.

I guess I’ll play on pc then. I had no idea so much would be missing from the Deck version.

It is also missing for anyone, especially AMD users, whom choose to toggle that setting Off. Usually in the name of FPS.

Also, config file editing must be done to remove a 62 FPS cap and enabled by default mouse acceleration.

EA really should do something about it.

Sure it would be better with the physx effects, but I just went through the whole game without it on Deck and it's a great run anyway.
Good game is good.

Just pretend PhysX wasn't there. It was a "Bonus" effect for Nvidia PC gamers back in the day but the console versions didn't have it either.

Are you sure? I seem to remember effects being in the Xbox 360 version that are not present here without PhysX.

This supposed Xbox 360 version playthrough does not have the transparent tarp and other cloth simulation-related assets. Which ones are you thinking of?

Around at the 44 minute mark I took a different turn and my fabric was there on 360 (as I remember) but not there on my Deck. Now in the video you don’t see it because the player never went there unfortunately. It’s possible my memory is faulty though, it was many years ago.
