Through a purely superficial lens, it looks like your typical happy ending - Faith saves her sister and all is well (the track sets the tone too), but the implications of the ending are in fact quite hopeless. As you said, every single person who has ever hunted Faith (with the sole exception being Jacknife) is still at large and Kate is still wanted for murder. And since Merc is dead, Faith is screwed, basically.
Although the setting provides some degree of social commentary, I feel like the story in itself is not very well thought out and the ending only highlights this. How CAN the game end? Faith has no significant allies to support her and she is but a one woman against a powerful, vaguely defined regime. The truth to the matter is that in order to get a satisfying ending, a large chunk of the game would have to be rewritten to (as you suggested) give faces to the individual "villain" groups such as PK, which the game failed to do. Still, the game itself is greatly enjoyable due to its gameplay (what an uncommon stance to take, I know).
I was quite dissapointed when I first learnt that the second instalment wasn't going to be a sequel and not even a prequel.
I am glad you agree and very good post! I do love the game but it is a franchise that has not been as cared for as much as it should of been. Your right without Merc and any other allies Faith can't continue to fight the regime she and cate would just be forced to run and hide the rest of their lives. We don't even know if she has Miller left on her side because he could be dead and he was never that much of a help to begin with.
Yeah, I'd attribute this to the game's experimental nature and DICE's inexperience with story writing, the focus was obviously more on gameplay than on the story elements. I suppose EA saw some potential in it though, and Catalyst came to be. I haven't actually played Catalyst so my knowledge of it is only based on reading summaries, watching videos, etc. but I think its intention was quite obviously to better the story, which to be honest, it didn't manage, but it directly addressed the major issues the previous game had, such as a shortage of villains. Again, I haven't played it, but from what I know, the game still has the same weakness the previous one did - the story, which is unfortunate.
I would say the ending in catalyst is much weaker. The new characters are absolutely awful. The voice acting for faith wasn't even good. What really bothered me is the complete lack of continuity. I suspect this was done on purpose they didnt care to market the game towards people who played the first game its always about trying to reach a wider audience. New voice actor for faith, new lead writer, new characters no characters from the first game with the exception of faith. They might as well have gone ahead and made faith white with blonde hair and changed her name.
If I were you id pick up catalyst on sale or from a 3rd party seller with a lower price than origin's price. Why pay more right? I originally pre ordered catalyst for 63 USD after taxes then I cancelled my pre order because I found a Product Key for it on G . 2. A. for 47. Probably much cheaper now.
When I first found out Faith was voiced by someone else I was quite disappointed. The new Faith is nothing like her original self and that's a shame.
Reboots of things seem to be quite popular these days. From movies like Star Wars 7 and the new Ghostbusters to games like Thief, Doom, Mass Effect Andromeda and ME: Catalyst. As for me personally, I abhor the trend because most reboots seem to be more cash grabs than anything else, including Catalyst (excluding Doom, that game is beloved by many).
At this point, however, I don't intend to buy Catalyst anytime soon, mainly because my PC is kind of crap and I like to have my games at a crisp 60 fps.
I can tell you they lied about the system requirements. My old Rig I replaced last year could run the game I did upgrade my graphics card in anticipation for catalyst's release to be able to have a better experience with it. I was able to download and play the beta with my HD 6870 Radeon card with just 1 GB of video memory the beta was just an unfinished version of the game poorly optimized. I did get a message trying to tell me I couldnt play the game because of inefficient gpu memory. The same thing happened with the open beta for Battlefront and I was able to play it with a few fixes to get to not crash in the main menu could I play it on the highet settings no but at medium it was fine.
I upgraded to an R7 370 2 GB just for catalyst it cost me 133$ I hardly used it before upgrading to a 1060 6 GB in my new rig so it was a waste.
Also for catalyst it says you need 4 logical cpu cores. Turns out people were able to play fine with intel's pentium's and i3's with hyper threading. Those processors are dual Core but 4 threads the newer models.
On the catalyst forums I discovered people with far older systems great for their day but antiquated now saying they were able to run the game (Phenom IIs and now legacy Radeon cards) My original gpu was about to become legacy(no more driver updates) that convinced me I needed whatever I could afford at the time The R7. When I went about selling my R7 on ebay I had to give it up for just 40 bucks less than half of what I paid for it.
I built my original rig in 2011 if your PC is much older than that then no chances are it would struggle to run Catalyst. (and everything about it was Budget oriented)
Huh. Well if that's the case, I may consider picking it up, the game seems fun enough.
I only got 18 hours out of it. I had installed for a year nearly before loading it up again to finish the story. I might play it again some day. Its worth playing at least one time through.
