Spore hasn't been updated since October 2010. There will be no further updates. Like you said, it's been "abandoned". The only reason it's still available in online stores is because it continues to bring in a trickle of cash due to residual sales.
What Spore is "missing" is the science. EA actually tricked scientists into "promoting" this game through a NatGeo special. EA even tried marketing this thing to schools as an aid to teaching evolution. Despite the fact that the only scientific accuracy in the game is 1) animals must eat food to survive; and 2) planets follow elliptical orbits. There is NO aspect of evolutionary theory in this game. Hell, even the tails on the comets are pointing the wrong direction.
And of COURSE the graphics "suck compared to new games." Spore was released September 2008, nearly SEVEN YEARS AGO. These were the BEST video cards available at that time: http://www.techradar.com/us/news/computing-components/graphics-cards/editor-s-choice-top-10-graphics-cards-415705
So, in a nutshell, you can either face reality that Spore is all that it's ever going to be (i.e. it is no longer a "game with great potential"), or you can learn to deal with disappointment.
Take care and good luck!
I know they are never going to update the game anymore, and there is barely any possibility of a sequal, but it is still one of my favorite games, and i was just blowing off steam about EA in the last comment. ;)
I have been thinking, that someday, i'm going to make and develop computer games, and onece I get enough money, I'm going to buy the game "Spore" so that i own the entire game and everything in it, then i'm going to pretty much throw everything in it in the trash eccept the basic concept behind it, then i'm going to start from scratch and make a new spore game (with a different name), and make it up to date, and never abandon it and always make more updates, and btw the new spore that i make will be a fully MULTIPLAYER GAME! thats right, people play together the whole way, in every stage, and who knows, if i can get servers with enough memory, i might even make more then one galaxy and some way to travel inbetween them!
I wish you luck! It's good to have goals.
Thrive has also been "in development" since before 2010. It's a great concept, but it's as likely to see the light-of-day as Star Citizen.
That... is the saddest thing I've read all week. Is there anything I can do to help?

Start a rebellion against EA. Burn them.
Then make something that's better to waste our time with.
I once palyed simcity4 by a friend. i also wanted it so i bought simcity societies(cd version)
and thought it would be same but better(hell, its whole different game. it even damaged my new pc when installing it) on that cd, ther was a demo. it was called Spore.
i was just the editor with tier 1 parts and the editor from spore is so amazingly good.
a few weeks later, i bought the game because i saw sweet and scary dlc and it needed original game to work.(that was the ONLY reason i bought it).so i bought Spore and the dlc. im so happy i bought SPORE and not the part where there is only the full editor( i thought it was better because of the longer name. i was 11 btw)that was summer 2011 i think.most of the community was already dead at that time, but spore was unable to connect to the servers, so i was alone for a LONG time. much later(maybe 2012) i bought the other dlc(One of the best dlcs EA ever made) adn palyed it. maybe early 2013, i finally was able to connect to the servers.... that was so beautiful even when the community was already dead.( but it sucked seeing ugly creations only made for adventures, in singleplayer) and i aslo got that thing were i have these ugly doctor pepper robot parts from the internet. i had many "friends" in spore(they seemed like me in descriptions/comments or were good at creating) but most of them stopped playing before i started. my only firend who is probably still playing is someone who creates airplanes and other vehicles SINCE 2008! Respect for him. i also stopped early 2014/late 2013.... and im sad now
