Does the game still have security risks?
Lately, I was taking a peak through the sales when I saw this game, and got really interested in playing it. Although, even back then, I heard there were some security risks involved, and that doesn't make me too happy...

Had they fixed it, or should I avoid this for my own personal safety?

Retail copies (and the free Creature Creator demo) included SecuROM which opened root-level security holes.

EA and others here claim that SecuROM was removed for the Steam version.

Personally, I wouldn't trust them to have removed SecuROM from the install but just "patch" it out afterwards.

Problem is, once SecuROM is on your system, you have to format the drive and reinstall your OS to get rid of it.

Well, unless someone opens up the game's files and looks around, we won't know for sure.

Guess that means I'm going to miss out on the sale.... Oh well.

A random link isn't really gonna make me feel confortable.

They're not random links.

Pcgamingwiki.com is maintained by PC gamers. This game has been on Steam for six years. Said PC gamers, I think, would know by now if the game has SecuROM or not.

I would like to make sure by asking people who had bought this game off steam who know all sorts of technical stuff to be able to confirm this, because just because they say it's gone, doesn't mean it fully is.

Heck, I uninstalled Orgin because I heard a story of the security risks it had. Having Battlefield 1942 wasn't worth having people possibly sneak into your private files, as much as I loved that game and wished it was on Steam....

You are seriously overplaying the risks. I have yet to hear about a single victim in all these years. Not one! The problem with being worried about things, is that it is a self sustaining entity. One word: Backups! Have them. If you *ever* would have a problem, wipe your disk and restore from the backup. I seriously doubt you will ever use that backup for that reason.

Like time I tried to wipe my computer, it bricked

And if that is so, good... But I would like to hear it from owners of the game to be sure.

You know how you avoid all these risks Renomaki? Don't use computers, at all.
Mithril Jun 4, 2014 @ 2:14pm
There you are again... being worried. Looking for issues. Guess what? You're going to find it. Nothing is ever perfect. It is impossible. And I am an owner of the game.. and no I haven't had any issues... ever. But then I don't open strange attachements in emails, click on dubious sites etc.. you know, where the crap actually comes from. So again.. you worry too much.

I think the guys who have it have played it and moved onto other games, the rest are too paranoid to buy it for fear of SecuROM setting fire to their PCs and burning down their homes.

I'm in two minds about it, but only because I'm wondering how well the game has aged since its original release. I liked it back in the day, but I'm not sure if I will now.
Mithril Jun 4, 2014 @ 2:19pm
There is cure for that paranoia: "A Fantastic Fear of Everything" A movie the guy needs to watch. :)
