No you don't need an EA account.
MinionJoe Sep 6, 2016 @ 11:47am
Out you want other players' creations in your game, you must login with a SPORE account.

If you want technical support, you must convert to Origin.

Does it have any DRM on it besides Steam? Originally I skipped it way back when because it has some really nasty DRM on it...like worse than Origin and Steam even, and every time there's a sale, I pass because it still has it, only this time...?

EDIT: Yeah, on the Origin page for it it says it has Securom. STILL!

Ugh, I'll skip it. Again.

Hardly fair to Maxis that EA sabotoged what would have been a huge game for them. Can't believe it's been 8 years now. I was looking forward to Spore for YEARS, then skipped buying it like most everyone else.

EA claims that SecuROM was removed from the Steam install.

Chances are though they just deactivated it instead.

Most folks don't give a ♥♥♥♥ about root-kits these days.

On Origin, yes. The Steam version supposedly has no additional DRM.

Our children already have Spore + GA; as of recent the Origin App has become increasingly unworkable and downright hostile to us ; ie 10 years of game purchases "poof" gone. No help from EA, incredible.
We can still use Spore w/out the Origin App., however, it's annoying due to CTD's etc/etc/etc, but fixable.
Prefer STEAM.
We will try 1; if it works properly, I'll have to pony up for 3 more....
Thanks for the tips, will update if it works.

Is there a way to confirm that Steam version doesn't have SecuROM?

I disliked that malware from the past release and have been holding off for a long time now waiting for a price drop and confirmation that it is finally gone. Finally took the plunge and bought it from the sale just need the confirmation before I install.

it won't let me use my Origin Account so I just go offline and play

Yeah, same here, if it does not have SecuRom I will buy but I need to know for sure.

I've been trying to confirm for the past few years. Some people have noted the SecuROM admin tools installed on their computer and the EA defenders say it probably installed from something besides Spore.

Personally, I'm not even willing to test it. The version of SecuROM that they used on the Retail CD cannot be installed by anything short of a drive format and a Windows reinstall. The uninstall tool from Sony does not work, the instructions from EA do not work, and the manual process from reclaimyourgame.com do not work.

But you both bought it anyway, so good ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ luck to you.

Can always refund if there is issues;-)

That's fine, but it won't remove SecuROM from your system if it installed.

Yeah, but they won't give you back the time and pain it takes to reinstall Windows. Honestly reinstalling 10 is easier than it's been in almost 20 years, but still...

I'm not willing to risk it...

EDIT: The first two Bioshock games use it, don't they? I'm doing the console version as a result... (when I finally get to Bioshock 2 lol. My backlog is absurd).

Don't want secuROM on your system?

Then install and use Windows 10 as the damned OS doesn't support it.

Huh, that's really interesting...

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/08/17/windows-10-safedisc-securom-drm/

It's also probably why EA refuses to support Spore on Windows 10.
