Short answer : Yes.

Medium answer:

securom was removed after the shjtstorm it caused maxis from LATER versions of the game.

-only the people who bought premium to have one of pre-order versions and people who bought the original release version (both only apeared fysically) had it, and a fix to remove it was releases after all the rage..

-if you still have such a version you are these days out of luck since the webpage with the fix does not excist anymore, however the EA webpage does offer help to redeem a free origin copy if that would be the case.

-The later releases of the game (since it sold out quickly) didn't have it, nor do any of the digital versions you can buy on steam, origine, gog or elsewhere.
(the GoG version of spore is the first drm free version of spore ever, though it has in it sourcecode steam drm, it has been turned off)

Long answer :

Securom was in a time people still resisted that kind of stuff (if only they still did)

-spore at that time was hyped through the roof, and while not a bad game it fell short of delivering it. That was already part of why the game was populair only 6 months after release.
-in itself games could survive that, but the added negative reputation from the securom crap had made it unsellable
-ofcourse it could have still be saved, but with a succesfull sim series still selling well.. plans for simeverthing (the alternative name for spore) were halted, stick to what you know that will earn profit.

You have to know that spore could have been really epic, should they have choocen to give it the same support other sim games did get (and I believe that perhaps they should revive spore and start making expantion packs for it today, after all a decenium has passed, perhaps features than expensive and impossible to make can now be made cheaper and better?

The first version of spore (than called SimEverthing) was shown on a game conferance and it had features that did not make it in the finished product.
-It has never been a secret why, it proved hard to complete all the features that they wanted to put in the game and with all the money poured into advertisement, postponing release date was not an option.
-so only about 1/3d of what should be in the game ever made it in the game, though at that time the intention was, to complete the remaining parts and later sell them as expantion packs (a formula quite succesfull for the sim 1 game, that in a time most games only had 3 expantion games, succesfully had like 40 of them..)
-ofcourse it does take time to produce those expantion packs, and with spore being a for the time expensive game to produce, and negative market prognoses (due tons of negative publicity) sim 2 was chocen as new project instead and any plans for expantion packs were canceled.

Parts that were promised (and shown on that conferance) but never made it in :
-The Aquatic stage, an extra stage between cellstage and creature stage. You would play a cambriam sea-creature and end the game as either aquatic, amphibian or land-dwelling
-This also ment that later stages could also have underwater tribes or city's, and rather than having a big monster in the oceans, one could actually swim across and even dive under.
-A tree editor, where you could create your own annimal life
-a much more complex game for all stages, creature stage was the most complete (and even that not fully).. the other stages were ment to have the same amount of content.

For cell stage : developing a cell consuming molecules, and developing parts in the cell, and have the cell actually be 3d..
http://s1.thingpic.com/images/bE/zvQzrUWBJTHDjmVmCp9iiwWR.png
-> like that....
It was also implied that chemosynthesis would be added, as a viable alternative to photosynthenis as a source of energy, with in later stages of the games, your creatures, tribes and city's being around volcanous and underwater ridges for their food.

-Tribal Stage
*what you did in creature mode would have made a much larger impact, races you killed off, would be extinct, races you allied, would be more friendly towards you, races you pissed off would be more hostile, and all of them could develop sentience..
And there would be A LOT more of them, like how in space stage you see tribal worlds with 50-ish tribal villages on them, yeah like that.
meanwhile you would discover fire, and other tech, while playing a bit RPG like.. more like how adventure mode is played.
-your goal here was not to merely ally or destroy 5 other tribes but become the dominant sentient spieces on your planet, by evolving your society, just as you do in creature stage by either befriending or killing off tribes.
(befriending would work like how ♥♥♥♥ sapiens presumingly absorbed ♥♥♥♥ neaderthalis into their own genepool)
Once you advanced enough you could move to civilization stage.
-> this stage is the most underdeveloped compared to plans of all the stages.

-civilization stage
*it was ment to play much more like grand strategy, developing your society through the ages.
Think of the likes of civilization, call to power, to get an idea of what you would get.
It would also be modulair, like alpha centauri's units were, but than for buildings to.
*rather than having to conquer the world, you would eventually develop enough to build and launch a rocket, starting the space stage with other civilizations still in play.

-space stage
*it was ment to play much calmer, and follow the 5 scales of Kardashev and a much more complex timescale) so it would be 5 stages, rather than 1.

*and it would have much better developed systems, including 10-12 planets per star (not all, but the averae one would have a higher number), upto 30 moons for gas giants and upto 6 moons for rocky ones, and it would include astroid belts and kuyper belts.
-planets would also have 7 tiers of development, not just 3.
-life would be varied, with different races have different demands on temperature, atmosphere and type (oceans could be of different types, methane, water, letc.. so could atmospheres and rock surfaces)
-this ment that T7 planets would not for all spieces mean the same thing.
-a plantversion of wildlife reserves would be added, (greenhouse) and they would be able to contain an unlimited number of spieces. those planets would generate credits, activing as a kind of zoo/herbatorium.

As for the actual space gameplay :

Space stage 1 :
-after you launched your first rocket you start your early space program, satilised, early missions to planets in your solar systems, eventually leading to ion engines, early colony's and astroid mining.
-> eventually you would start construction of a dyson sphere around your star(s), once completed, you would become a type II civilization (and move on to the next phase of the game)

Space stage 2 :
-in this stage you would have solarsails, powered by lazers, powered by your dyson sphere, you would expand to the stars nearest to your own (since even at halve lightspeed it would take decades to get there. Possible time dialation would be added to this part of the game.. to isolate your different colony's from eachother. You would not leave your own local starcluster.
-you would start to learn early terraforming, but only very basic, and it would not be instant but rather instalattions that would change things over vasrt amounts of time. Possibly you would also research AI in this era and have the option to become cyborgs.
-you would also be able to construct trade vessels, and control multiple fleets, to set up a trade-network, protect your worlds and trade against pirates and all that. (like a space-RTS/TBS)
*this era would end once you discovered faster than light travel, this could be done in multiple ways.
-a random event would make an alien ship crash on a nearby world (not as close as in the basic game, but more like a star 50ly away..).. if this was one of your inhabited worlds or you manage to stumple upon one before it perishes.. you get the option to either kill the crew and take the ship, charge them for assistance, or help them on their way freely.
*if you take the ship (or when the crew already perished) you can reverse engineer it's propulsion once your tech advanced enough (evil ending)
*if you forced them to trade their secrets for your help, it will cost you credits, and they learn you it (neutral ending)
*you could just develop the technology on your own eventually (good ending)

Space stage 3 :
-this would be the stage that looks like current space stage, only much more diverse (as stated before, more variation in types of life, more tiers, more everything)
*you would colonise thousands of worlds, and it would be made easier to do so by the added tools, not so much crappy pirates and natural disaster events (you would be able to simply set aside part of your budget to take care of that), colony's would autodevelop,
-your research would focus first in completing your knowledge on how to terraform worlds, and in the "what is sentience" branch, as well as progressing your engine and weapon technology's futher.
-eventually your colony's would autodevelop, autoseed to nearby systems, and so on, making the process of conquering the entire universe much more realistic.
(gray goo would in this stage be a gimmic that could destroy you and everything else... and be an achievement)
-you would indeed meat other races but interaction with them would be much more RTS/TBS style. Rather than 1 ship with 5 allies, you would command multiple fleets, with many ships in each of them.
-your main goal in this stage would be to discover a way to travel to different space systems (it would indeed end when you meet steve in the center of the galaxy, but once you do, instead of a staff of life you get a portal to other galaxies

Space stage 4 :
-it would continue like space stage 3, but now you would play in multiple galaxies, little was released about this stage, but presumingly you would up the scale ever more.. (ever bigger groupings of galacies, untill eventually you would own our universe..)
-this would end when you discovered paralel dimensions (enter the multiverse)

space stage 5 :
the multiverse was suppose to be a multiplayer stage of spore.. very VERY little was released about this.

Just woke up and thought I'd get to rant about one of my favorite subjects: SecuRom.

Only to be preempted by Dutch's in-depth replies.

I agree. DRM is more of an inconvenience to legitimate users than it is a protector of a company's software.

Case in point: https://www.engadget.com/2008/12/07/spore-tops-list-of-most-pirated-pc-games-of-2008/

So far as Steam is concerned: I'd researched Steam for nearly 2 years before I decided to install it on an old PC and give it a go. While Steam is at its heart DRM, it also provides a lot of added value in automatic updates, user forums, friend lists, etc that (I feel) make up for the inconvenience of the DRM. (Edit: AND it completely unloads from memory when you close it.)

And there are a handful of games on Steam that don't utilize the DRM aspect at all.

Conversely, there are plenty of games on Steam that utilize the Steam DRM, a third-party launcher (sa UPlay), and encryption software (sa Denuvo). Which is (IMO) completely unacceptable.

Hell, I don't even get much inconvenience from Steam's DRM. Only when my internet is down, which is seldom.

I'd even be willing to pay the $10 for the Steam version of Spore + Creepy/Cute + GA. Unfortunately, I don't think there's any way to get my Dr. Pepper DLC into to it, from my Origins version..

If you already have Spore on Origin, there's no reason to get it on Steam. It's the same game accessing the same Sporepedia server.

Well, I have the old retail disc version. While it shows up on my Origins account, the files on my drive haven't been updated since 2011. Last time played seems to be Mar 2015, still using the disc for copy protection. That's all on a Mac.

I've never installed the Origin app. Neither that nor the Steam version support playing on Mac, but I have a Windows box now too. I'd just like to avoid the hassle of "install everything in just the right order", and having to have the DVD in just to play. :)

If you still have the Mac, EA has Origin for Mac and Spore works on Mac through Origin. Or so I've been told.

You should be able to register the same CD key on Origin for Windows too. If not, EA Support can switch it over for you.

There's really no reason you need to buy another copy. But it's your money.

Thanks for all your info. I installed Origin App on my Windows, and Installed Galactic Adventures thru that, but it won't start. I suspect because the base Spore isn't installed.

Update: got EA help to transfer the base game to my Origin account and installed. Now both work. Didn't bother getting them to transfer the Dr Pepper Bot Parts pack, it really didn't add anything anyway. :P

Who knows, I might pick up Creppy/Cute now… Altho, I see that Origin's 1/2 off price on C&C would cover Steams price on all 3 right now. :P

Unfortunately, the SecuROM RootKit has not been removed and installing this POS will open huge holes in your security. I had to buy it again on GOG (who had the good sense to scrab any traces of the notorious DRM). However, even if I have never installed it on STEAM, Valve refused to refund my purchase because "more than 2 weeks have passed since the purchase"...

I just tried to download the game, but after reading this, i paused the download, and uninstalled the game. Is my computer still safe?
MinionJoe Feb 20, 2020 @ 8:15am
Windows 10 does not allow the installation of SecuROM, so if you're on Win10, you're safe.

If you're on Win7, you may be able to extrapolate a method to detect/remove SecuROM from this Tom's Guide:

https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/how-to-remove-securom-malware-after-uninstalling-the-bioshock-demo.113054/

The SecuROM website provided this information:

The SecuROM™ registry keys can be found in one or both of the following locations: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SecuROM. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SecuROM

So if those keys exist in your registry, chances are SecuROM is (or was) on your system.

If you don't know how to check/edit your Windows registry, I can't help you. That's nothing I'm willing to walk someone through over the internet, as it can brick your PC if you screw it up.
