Crysis

Is Crysis Open-World?
I'm thinking about getting a Crysis game, but the 1st thing i need to know is whether they're acctually as "sandbox" as I've been lead to believe. Crysis 2 is out because it's more linear than Crysis 1, which is apparently "open-world" despite the fact that it has eleven diferent objective-driven levels. However, it's still a possibility since each "level" looks "open."
Currently, though, I'm looking at Crysis 3. From reading some descriptions it looks like that game is one giant map of New York under the dome where you beat the game by running around killing things in a huge n' deadly post-apocolyptic Jungle. Then again, I might be getting too hopeful.
So... two questions.
1. are Crysis 1 levels like the ones in the first "Transformers" game, essentially large chunks of map that you can screw around in until you choose to play the mission?
2. Is Crysis 3 truly the sandbox epicness I hope it is?
Also: please be aware that I DESPISE linear games with a passion. Shooter-wise, I'm a fan of Just Cause 2 and Planetside 2, the more destruction the better. Though Half Life 2 is a good game, I kind of have a grudge against it because of lack of choice and general repetitiveness when you die. Bassically, there's one story in that game which you have to "beat", which gets under my skin... because there's nothing else to do.

crysis 3 is like crysis 2. maybe smaller & more linear. it is NOT escape from new york crysis edition or at all. you get what id call hubs or rooms, & you can approach them in different ways (stealth, stealth, or stealth). some are pretty large, see the one in totalbiscuits youtube video, most are small to smaller.

crysis 1 isnt open world by any real definition. its just very open, large but linear levels...can't really think of a comparable game right now. maybe like the transformers game but i havent played that.

Ok. Thanks. The Old Transformers game essentially drops a player in a city-sized level with the option to "begin mission." I, for one, never acctually completeted many of the missions since after the quest was done you moved on to a new city where you could screw around until you felt it was time to start up the mission again. That's the impression I got of Crysis 1, but it could be a bit of an overstatement...

Crysis 1 is like a circle....you have a start somewhere and a finish somewhere, and all this land in between. You choose how to get there.

C2 is pretty linear, with maybe an alternate path in the sewers under the street. Noty as open, decent game but nothing compared to C1. I havent played C3 but i've seen walkthroughs of the first 2 levels, and they seem pretty much a combination of the 2. Not as open as C1, but it gives you more paths than C2.

"Crysis 1 is like a circle....you have a start somewhere and a finish somewhere, and all this land in between. You choose how to get there. " Yep... Maps are realy big and graphic is still very very nice :) You can go nearly everywher on the map. But Story/Missions are linear.

I wouldn't say it is "open world" as much as the setting is within a open world... it is a wilderness setting, and sometimes you have a choice not to do or do a side quest. Also you have the option of choosing approaches, much like the first far cry game, they are very similar games in fact...

its the most sandbox a FPS will ever get.... Although its not exactly grand theft auto.

There are already more sandboxy FPS's than this.

Anyway, the game isn't open world or sandbox; it's got large open "levels" in which you can approach missions in various ways. It's often fun to replay missions just to go about them in a different way.

It doesn't feel linear though, except in some few circumstances where it's just more linear than some of the other areas you've previously been through.

It can be a lot of fun

You can compare Crysis to the first Far Cry, is exactly the same mechanics, i think that Halo is a good reference too

Yeah like others have said... Crysis is kindof... herded game play. You head in a general direction which eventually leads to completion of some mission, small goal, blah blah. not purely open world, not 100 percent guided play.

Ya i kind of feel the same way. If you like open world games FarCry 3 is a TON of fun (story is iffy near then end.) But the 'messing around between missions' is where i think that game shines. and Blood Dragon Is amazing with one flaw. (to upgrade your weapons to max you clear out all the bases but then all you have left to fight with your top of the line weapons is Dragons. no patrols nothing else)

But that's one of the reasons i'm only bothering with CRYsis 1. It's kiund of open world, it's a jungle island, it's pretty neat.

Crysis is not open world, I would say Just Cause 2, GTA4, Far Cry 3 and Skyrim are. Crysis is linear progression through a series of open combat arena's with the freedom to move where you like and choose your own method of killing everything or evading combat.

The game deffinitely IS linear becaue you have set levels, once you complete one you generally can't go back.
