It's random and it depends on your percentage to have a critical shot ... . (character or ship)

Check for those, in the skill's tree to improve your chances ... .

So it does not matter, what body part I hit?

Where can I see the percentag of my critical hit chance?

You have to refer to the skill tree. I think, it's one for character weapons and many for space ship weapons ... .

Some skills allow increase critical chance/damage, or critical chance/damage after a condition like a kill, check skills in combat section. That's for the shooting, I don't remind it for ship but perhaps.

If I remind well some weapons have some mod related to critical. And still if I remind well, it's pistols with scope that have the most potential of critical but with multiple skills.

Yes, but is it vital to aim at a specific body part like the head? Or does it not completely matter`?

Go into the settings - display and enable damage numbers. Red numbers are critical hits. Now have the Adoring Fan in your crew and test by shooting different parts of his body (he is afaik the only one not getting offended by this).

You might find this to be useful:
https://help.bethesda.net/#en/answer/60888
specifically the following -

Basic Combat Skills:
Pistol Certification - Rank 4

Advanced Combat Skills:
Particle Beams - Rank 4

Expert Combat Skills:
Marksmanship - all Ranks

Master Social Skills [sic] (this is wrongly titled - it should read Master Combat Skills):
Sharpshooting - all Ranks

And for the full chart of all Combat Skills, see:
https://starfieldwiki.net/wiki/Starfield:Combat_Skills

Good luck!

I tested it. No matter, what body part I hit, only white numbers. I am using a laser rife. Doest it matter?

Use the voice activated 5% crit cheat by praising diversity into your mic while playing.

Critical hits are random. You have a percentage chance of getting crit, doesn't matter what weapon your use, nor does it matter where you hit. It is *possible* that headshots have a higher critical hit chance, but, I can't 100% confirm that.

Details are in game:
- Click on a skill in skills panel, read carefull the description of each skill level for the skill.
- For weapons mods, the possible mods depend of the weapon type, select the mod part then a mod for it, read carefully the description in the high.
- For weapons traits, read trait description it explains all.

There's nothing more, for example you can combine a pistol and equip it with a scope that at least some pistols allow, then:
- Pistol Certification level 4: Pistol kills grant +25% critical hit chance for 5 seconds.
- Marksmanship level 3: Increase critical hit chance with non-automatic ranged weapons by 15%
- Marksmanship level 4: Critical hits using a non-automatic ranged weapon without a scope do double damage and those with scopes knock down enemies on the next shot.
- Sniper Certification: Headshots while aiming with a scoped weapons have a +25% critical hit chance.
=> Body part involved, the head.
- Sharpshooting level 1: Increase headshot critical damage by 50% with ranged weapons.
=> Body part involved, the head.
- Sharpshooting level 2: Increase critical damage to enemy legs by 50% with ranged weapons.
=> Body part involved, legs.
- Sharpshooting level 3: Increase all critical damage to enemies by 50% with ranged weapons.
- Sharpshooting level 4: Ranged critical hit kills increase your critical hit chance with all ranged weapons by 25% for 20 seconds.

For weapons mods, I don't have the current play setup to check, and eventually don't remind well, but you'll need check yourself all possible mods for each weapon type, in case a few target critical.

Moreover quote that there's a current OP hole in the game with beam weapons exploiting beam skill but also laser skill and ballistic skills. So no weapon can beat them so for crit records in term of amount, they should be largely above, but don't cry when the OP hole will be fixed.

is there a number that shows this to be true in the game while fighting?
Low Standards Mar 14, 2024 @ 5:51am
headshots. Always go for the head.

Has quoted already you can change a game option to show hits and when it's red it's critical. For checking there's no bug I let you have fun with that. :-)

Frankly I don't think critical has been so much focused in the design, but I didn't try the build I suggested crit oriented.
