PSA: save+ disabled
I was in the middle of combat and I got stuck in some weird state where quicksave/save/inventory is disabled. I hit <tab> to bring up the character menu and it takes me to the main menu instead. I can see quicksave and save options are greyed out on this menu. I can quit but a notification tells me progress will be lost if I quit.

At first I thought, "Is my save folder permissions borked?" Nope, I ruled that out. Can't access missions or the map and no way to fast travel. Can't engage the lockpicking mini game either. I think there's a temporary freeze on these things during combat and my game got stuck in that freeze mode for whatever reason.

Changing cells didn't reset it. I found this command that fixed a similar issue:
https://www.gamerevolution.com/guides/946940-starfield-cant-save-bug-no-inventory-open-new-game-plus-ng-glitch

SetInChargen 0 0 0

Didn't work. The only way I could get back to normal was to reload my last save which was when I exited my ship for this POI. I lost about 5 mins of progress. No big deal.

I'm posting this for awareness and maybe somebody found a fix that doesn't involve reloading.

Anyone?

This has happened a few times since then, but being aware of it helps.

Can you force a save by using the console command: 'save [savename]'? And if so, are you then able to load it?

I'll try that, but saving isn't the only issue. Access to everything on the main UI is blocked: inventory, skills, powers, all of it.

Ah it just occurred to me, saving from the console, then reloading that save would reset everything and not lose any progress :D

Maybe you could try the 'forcemenu [menu name]' command for the obstinate menus. I'm not sure about how to re-enable the main UI though.

I'm sorry. I meant 'showmenu' not 'forcemenu'. Forgive me, I was a little careless.

Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention Krash. I don't think previous BGS games had this issue. It would seem weird to me if that was an intentional design decision. Maybe a bug? Nonetheless, I'm really glad it's being discussed here. That's how solutions are found.

I feel like there might be a few scripted battles that lock saves out intentionally?
Or not, and it's a bug that I've experienced as well.

Good stuff Krash. That's also why i save early and often in all BGS games.

how many saves do you have? i had a message popup after one of the updates saying that i had too many saves.
i heard weird stuff happens when you have a lot of saves files.

Less than 40 saves

There are definitely some cutscenes and other events where you can't access the UI, only the main menu (and the save option is disabled) - e.g., during your ship docking/landing sequence. It sounds like your program got stuck in one of these. I've never had that happen but at least loading a previous save is still an option.
