Decorating on ships and outposts (A question)
I just married Sarah and she gave me a gift after the wedding, when I returned back to the ship I noticed I could place it as a decoration (which is really cool)

Anyway I also received various other misc objects such as ancient earth basketball, football, hockey stick etc from the captain who you help settle on the world where you marry Sarah (which was a really cool side quest btw) and I'm wondering if it's possible to place them as decorations too? I tried to in the menu but it didn't seem to display them as an option.

I'd love to be able to place any item I find and use it a a decoration on my ship and outposts.

However, and this is a big caveat, you are limited in how the objects can be placed, no stacking, and they have a designated orientation that can only be manipulated on one axis. Some objects like blades (and likely ranged weps as well) cannot be placed this way at all, sad because you can't use Press/Hold E either, they can only be dropped in place from inventory and then very carefully pushed around with another object -- I often use a screwdriver. Books are easy to place using decorator mode but apparently cannot be placed close to one another on a shelf like real books, After placing a normally non-static object using decorator mode, it can no longer be moved using Press/Hold E outside of decorator mode, that key just puts them in your inventory and they are once again non-static.

All in all, the placement options for decorating are far too limited and chancy, lacking a lot of the usual options like snapping and precision mode that make it much simpler to accomplish.

There's a way to manually place objects in the room. Drop it. Pick it up by holding E. Move it around and drop it where you want it.

Yeah I was aware of that method, but thanks for mentioning it. My concern with that method is it probably won't be a static and unmoveable item will it? It could get knocked around or lost.

One of the good things about using the docorating/outpost menu is items stay static. I was hoping there was a way to use the decorating menu to place all the misc items.

In fallout 4 I used a mod called OCdecorator for doing that (placing static objects)

Definitely not. You'll need a mod for what you want to do.

Understood, thanks again.

there is a new (I think?) interactable panel in the ship's cockpit, and on the walls of the outposts, i dont know if that would work for placing something from your inventory tho

As far as I know that just opens up the regular decorating menu. The same as when you open scanner mode and choose decorating mode.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Oh okay I'll give this a try. Thanks.

Edit. Oh my goodness that worked. Thank you, that is exactly what I was wanting to do. You just made decorating way better for me.

One last bump in case this helps anyone else.

This is a useful post that many players could benefit from. They'll have to rely on the search feature for obvious reasons.
