What happens if I steal?

I didnt even know I was stealing at first until I ran into a safe in some random room at New Atlantis. When I focus on the safe, the pop up clip highlights 'Do you want to STEAL FROM--- Press E', then I saw there was a red little cube and arrow icon on the message clip just as I saw on many other things around and things I took before entering the room as I realized I have been stealing... But the consequences are yet to show up or is there really any consequences at all? Anybody?

Sell them at the Trade Authority. If you get arrested for another crime, all those items will be found and confiscated.

I'm not sure if there is a stat for stealing stuff. There is a skill for it. Some companions get a little fussy then you do immoral things, but other than that, not sure except if you get arrested they confiscate it.

Almost all NPCs who will form your crew or accompany you will be extremely displeased IF THEY SEE IT. For the Constellation members, it will make it very laborious to get their side quests.

If you want to commit a crime, do it alone and don't leave any witnesses. :o

Havent done much pickpocketing but if its like fallout then you can pickpocket the good stuff then put a grenade in their pocket and they will blow up.

If you steal a good weapon or armor, you can launder it by selling it the a trade authority vendor and buy it back. It will lose the "stolen" marker.
But it must be a human vendor, the vending machines dont have a buy back button!

Stealing is a low-level offense, but don't DARE to try to pick up and move something... that is a death sentence and will have every guard in the area and in orbit trying to kill you. I had to leave UC space because I moved a ladder that had fallen in front of a door. "PUT THAT DOWN!!" and then the bullets started flying...
