Vortex Mods broke my game...and its not working
I was struggling with getting most of my vortex mods to work with Starfield, re installed the game 3 times now and removed the vortex mod manager and all (as far as I can see after some file fishing) related vortex files and mode from my computer and Starfield is refusing to open. My NVIDA drivers and displays detect something opening, but it later closes out and *pings* closed. Starfield is now no longer operable and unable to run... I have validated files in preferences and have checked my local files. I'm:steamsad: afraid my cloud saved data was saved in incorrect locations, and if I were to re install that cloud data gets put back into the places I don't want them at...

Before you re-installed Starfield did you manually delete the previous game folder first..? Sometimes old files from mods can hang around and cause issues... Also delete the Starfield folder in My Document/My Games also... (Back up any saves first)...

Your first mistake was using Vortex and supporting Nexus. Just saying.

Yeah the moral police are behind the issue lol.. Come on man... Get off your high horse, some people just want to play games and use mods - Not everything needs to be political... :steamfacepalm:

Never ever use Vortex... Either do mods manually or find a better mod manager.

That said three things

Uninstall Starfield - yes it sucks but its sometimes the only way, mods break core things.
Make sure you delete any aspect of mods - which is usually your saves as well, mods break saves if you uninstall large mods.

Make sure every aspect of starfield is gone. (My Documents, Users/Appdata etc)

Reinstall Starfield.. New game.

I agree - Dont use Vortex... Either use the community version of Nexus Mod Manager or use Mod Manager 2 (although MM2 is a bit more complex)... You will also want to get/use Loot to help sort mod order...

There is NOTHING wrong with Vortex or Mod Organizer 2 or using mods from Nexus Mods.

If you have the Steam Version of Starfield, I recommend using MO2 as the Mod Organizer because it automatically controls plugins .. but both work fine.

It is almost always user error that cause issues with these Mod Organizers.

I had the same issue yesterday after a mod update, I would recommend making sure to turn off OneDrive sync of the Documents and then make sure to check the documents and see if "OneDrive" has created a shortcut, go into the shortcut copy and paste the content of your standard documents back in the documents folder and then delete the shortcut and uninstall OneDrive since it is quite bugged. Once all of that is done, run Starfield files check, no need to reinstall the game these days. Once done, Starfield will most likely download a few files for you. Once done, then you can restart the Vortex and make sure you click on the "Fix" button for the StarfieldCustom.ini, that will fix most of your issues.

Be careful with what mods you use before the creation kit comes out. Having the proper tools in the modders hands can go a long way toward mod stability.

stop using mods

Stop using Vortex.

Learn to add mods properly and you will never have issues.

Vortex is fine, but with it (like any mod manager) you need to understand what its trying to do and how modding bethesda games work. Some larger mods (nothing that's out for starfield now probably) need to be downloaded manually and then can be installed with Vortex. Watch some tutorials on modding. Add one mod to your game at a time (with testing in between) to know what mod may be the issue for you. Does the mod require Starfield Script extender? If it does did you install it correctly? You also need to understand how to recover your game if something goes wrong - like it sounds like it has in your case. Fortunately some helpful people right here in this topic walked through how to do that already so I wont repeat what's already been said.

Vortex is fine. I have been playing The Witcher 3, Skyrim, Fallout NV and 4, Cyberpunk, and now Starfield, hardly any problems. And I'm talking over one hundred of simultaneously installed mods per game.

I ran Fallout 4 (using Vortex) with 220+ mods and it worked just fine. The same with Skyrim and New Vegas, not as many mods but no issues with Vortex.

The same people saying "don't use vortex" because they don't like the censorship probably use google every single day. Must be nice to pick and choose like a hypocrite.

It works fine, you just have to understand what its doing. Latest release makes a bridge folder from your documents to the games root which is where I suspect the problem lies. If you don't read carefully you can get it all messed up.

^This was the only sensible reply in this whole thread.

Most mods are not safe for save files in their current state. File system is also somewhat different than in previous games. Too many people are simply assuming their work would not cause issues in a game, which introduced new modding layer, which we currently know very little about.
