How does the game decides who the Emissary is? [*Contains Mild Spoilers*]
So, on each NG+ where I have chosen to do the main story, the identity of the Emissary has been a different person.
In my first playthrough, it was Barret. Because on the first playthrough it is whoever died. On my current one it is Andreja and no one died. Because no one needs to die in NG+

I'm just curious if there is a rhyme or reason to it, like the first playthrough it's always the same person (whoever died) but on NG+ playthroughs is it based on anything else, perhaps affinity? Or is it just totally RNG?

To answer your question and get off my rant I believe it is who you have the highest affinity with in your current uni. At least that is how it seems through NG+7 for me ATM. And I still have not gotten one of the unique Lodge entrances...SMH. Sorry ranting again.

i think its random and i thought its always Sam Coe or Barrett but in a NG+ i found Sarah next to the Hunter.

Odd.

I would’ve thought the Emissary would’ve always been the same as they’re a specific character - like the Hunter - who goes from universe to universe.

Both the Emissary and the Hunter claim to have gone through this series of events multiple times across different universes.

I wouldnt be surprised if it was yet another omission or simply a bug ;p

When I first talked to emissary in original universe he said it was always him who would go into the unity and always me who would die, i dont see any reason to make it random at this point ;p

From what I've noted thus far , and I may be entirely wrong but this has been my experience.

When doing the main story it can be manipulated somewhat, eg any kind of romantic partner will definitely be one of the 2 choices.

When you go to help with repairs on the eye, the first person you help will be choice number 2. If you have no romantic partner at this point then the first 2 people you help will be the people you will have to decide between ( goto the eye or stay at lodge).

Whgen you skip the story it seems to be which ever companions you have interacted with the most / had on your ship / spoken too etc.

On my last run (last night) I had not spoke to anybody in constelation except the very 1st chat with Sarah. She never entered my ship and I completely ignored the rest. She was the Emissary that time. so I think it's tied to interactions / affection (if thats the right term).

On previous run I had Sam on my ship (for far too long) he was the emissary in that run, prior I had spent time with Barret so I could do his side quest and on that occasion he was the Emissary and so on.
i agree, i think its like taht

I agree. I think on my 3rd time I actually took the Hunter down when he chased through the Well and he gave me a weapon and exclaimed he had never been bested before, but in the final temple I've never had to fight either , not once.

Only Lodge entrance I've had is meeting myself , twice now.

In my current NG+10 game the Emissary was Sarah (I chose to kill her, can you blame me?). You hear Sarah’s voice when you are invited to board the Starborn ship, go to NASA or meet her at the Buried Temple in the final boss encounter but when the Emissary talks to you from the Helix ship (happens twice) it is just the same robotic voice you hear every time, regardless of who the Emissary is in your game. Very strange.

By the way, that arrogant voice and the holier-than-thou attitude is why I always side with the Hunter, no exception.

I already knew that if you do the story in a way where someone does die, then the Emissary will be that person. I said as much behind spoiler tags in the original post. it's when no one dies that I was expressing curiosity about.

I suspect the post prior to yours is the right answer. Seeing as the highest affinity companion is one out of the two possibilities of who will die when someone does die.

all my regular playthroughs always had whichever companion died in the story mode
oh EDIT: didnt read all of it, sorry. I believe its based on who you had the most affinity for

My highest affinity was with Sam and he has never been the emissary for me. It's been Barrett and Sarah, 2X, who i never really had much to do with. Think it's just random.

Did either of them die though? If you are playing the story without using the NG+ option to save everyone, the Emissary is always the one who died.

Sam died the first time I played. Barrett was the emissary that time. After that, I always took the artifacts with me so the Hunter wouldn't attack the Lodge. And Sarah was the emissary after that.
