Stealth?
What the hell is wrong with stealth in this game? I will be on top of a tower snipping an enemy with suppressor not even close to other enemies and they are alerted. They can even spot me all the way up to the tower.

Maybe they are alerted by seeing their friends getting shot?

But seriously though, not had a problem with being sneaky in this game.

How? I got the skills when I created my character and enemies see me from miles away. Getting one kill alerts them and I have to wait a few seconds for the stealth meter to go down and kill another one.

It depends on how alert and skilled the enemy is and how your own abilities stack up. You can get away with sniping without being seen. You can even have an enemy walk right by you without being noticed.
And if you snipe they may blind fire in your direction without having actually spotted you.
Make sure the small black bars on the stealth meter are little to none. If you are exposed at a bright lit spot, your successful stealth just means nobody is looking at you.

Stealth works iirc, it's just Fallout 4's hyperbolic version of the rules, meaning you're gonna have to be running around in space in your skivvies and a helmet, will need to have maxed out your perks, be walking and operate at night even if you're indoors. There are a few drugs that help also, can't remember which.

Just one rank in stealth doesn't do much. And suppressors only mute the sound, not silence it. There is also the chance that your killing an enemy with a sniper shot will alert all of them. As you gain more ranks in stealth this will happen less often. You can also add gravitics to your armor at a work bench to help silence your movements and if you get lucky, also have some armor with the chameleon buff. There is still a small base chance of alerting foes, but you'll have it happen only rarely while picking off enemies.

I had 3 ranks at stealth... enemies would see me from miles away after killing someone

Judging from how I remember doing the Ryujin missions at launch, stealth in this game has always kinda sucked. This ain't Thief or Metal Gear Solid, that's for sure...

Stealth can be hard in this game. Like when you are in a closed room and standing still. The stealth bar(for me anyway) is half full. i dont know if it is a bug or other tings come in to play, like the difficulty you play on.

Apparently peoples experience with stealth varies from person to person. Some people say it works fine. But others, like me, find it extremely non-functional. Like it works, so long as I'm not moving, and the enemy isnt facing me. But even with all stealth skills, and perks, and what have you, if they are facing me, they will see me. Without the invisibility power, I find it extremely difficult to remain unseen. With it? Well now you're at Skyrim levels of stealth nonsense.
Edit: Just some extra notes.
Stealth use to be worse, but they made it more forgiving. This was noted in a patch at some point.
Wearing a spacesuit also makes you more likely to be detected. I've tested this, and it does seem to be true. At least from my experience.
Internal areas seem to be more of an issue than outdoor. Just due to enemy proximity and placement. Its very rare to be able to get into a room, without there being a close by enemy, directly facing the only path into said room, or corridor. Sometimes multiple.

is your torch on ? maybe that is giving you away ?

chameleon clothing for stealth ... simples ...

the stealthy stuff worked okay for me when i used it .. apart from that ryujin mission where you jump across the lights etc ... that mission was a real pain in my R's ....

Anyone else find it funny that a 30 year old game "Thief" and the original Deus Ex were more competent at Stealth mechanics than a 2023 title with built in stealth mechanics?

As a former active duty marine scout/sniper, I could say a whole lot here, but I'm gonna laugh and move on. Reminding myself it is a game. Not real life, and anything I say here would be a waste of time really.

You are right its a game and not real life. i think the sniper part of the stealth system in this game is good, you have to think before you shoot and plan ahead. i like that. But when you make a game with stealth mechanics( or any mechanics) it has to make sense and fit the game (in my opinion). Some things do other things dont in this game. i like starfield and i can see you really do 3000 hrs wow.
