I still have to figure it out because at controllers, you can long-press the map button to go to that map directly ........
I have thrown more than my share of grenades while trying to open the map, so I feel your pain. Unfortunately, I don't know of any shortcuts.
I tap M (open planet map) and then G (surface map). It took awhile, but I'm mostly used to it now.
Some of the key bindings can be changed. Main menu, Settings, Bindings; then scroll down to Starmap way at the bottom of the page.
I like the grenades on G. Makes it easy for me to remember. So if I change something, it will be the Surface Map key.
As I typed this, I did a quick experiment. I made the key M instead of G] . I press M once to open the planet map and tap it again to open the surface map. (I don't know why they show the bracket with those keys, unless it is to designate that it is a secondary use of the keys.)
For the heck of it, I mapped it to the "home" key to see if I could use it as a one-key way to get to the surface map. It did nothing. Press M to go to planet map and then the home key worked. So, looks like we'll always have to open the planet map first.
edited to add: I think I'm going to keep it on M. I think the double M click will be easiest for me.
Yes indeed I think someone is having a giggle over there at how many grenades we're accidentally chucking at innocent civilians :)
When I was trying to learn how to conduct a ship battle, I spent more time standing up than in the pilot's seat.
