The standard is Red Dead 2
We've seen it done right, and new Bugthesda can't hack it under pressure.

or KCD, 1 and 2 both. All three games have an amazing level of detail in every aspect.
Elden Ring was made during covid, this is what the weeping failed studios blamed their fails on even years later. It has a 90+ rating
god, i still have to play elden ring because i know if i do i'll be forfeiting my life for at least three months. i've tried it and the urge to purchase it is strong.

companies just got lazy and greedy, and blame their shortcomings on everything but their bad practices, pat each other backs, give meaningless awards, but then when it comes to the wide public we always see the truth, and it hurts 'em

Rdr2 is the exception, not the standard.

Also, quite the coincidental timing for this post to be made.

exception... how? just because it went back to being too good for modern standards? or because it dared to improve along with technology, as games should? or because it is optimized?

exception because 99% of games released dont reach that level of detail and greateness which by definition makes it an exception rather than the standard when it comes to video games

if it were the standard than most games were like rdr2 in those aspects so as of now rdr2 is the exception, not the rule

Wdym how?

Because it is a game of a generation, like the witcher 3, or gta 5.

Those aren’t standards, but exceptions. A standard is generally an average, not an exceptionally good thing.

most games also tend to have smaller budgets than the alleged 540 millions RDR2 had. Except i've played other smaller games with a level of detail just as good, not just fidelty, but overall gameplay, story and more, and starfield, with its 400 Mil -- i didn't want and don't want to believe it -- doesn't feel even remotely near on the same level, so no, it's not an exception.

it's an exceptionally well made game, yes, it is, because the production was that big, but scaled up, or down, there are games with far smaller budgets that would outdo even RDR2, and games with coomparable budget that feel like indie productions.

400 million dollars is a lot of money. And starfield delivered this.

skyrim, fallout 4, fallout 3 are all games of a generation.

and standard doesn't equal bad practices. Btw what about all the soulsgames, each and every a devastating success? or the first TLOU?

red dead i a good standard, it has no paid mods and zero beth bots gatekeeping a failed narrative for two years.

I didn’t say standard meant bad practice?

I said a standard is something average, something reachable. Exceptions are not standards.

And no, skyrim or fallout are far from games of a generation in the way rdr 2 is one…

You are conflating two vastly different concepts. Rdr2 very much IS an exception, and not a standard.

Nightreign is out over the weekend, I'm sure it will be good, that studio does it right each time.
exactly, how? it's not like it's rocket science, it's a game, nothing more. Yet they delivered a finished, polished product with an exceptional minute amount of bugs that felt integral throughout its duration. I'm not a rockstar fan, i play their games but they aren't something i return to often, but i have to say, even for a western, not my fave genre, RDR2 was a unique experience.

Good games should be like that.

so true. the only one that felt off to me was sekiro, and even still that too was a spectacular title, far cleaner that the first 2 DS for sure, though for me the cake goes to DS3 for the best souls game
