I'm loving the game so far, but is junk useless?
I remember in Fallout 4 loving being able to pick up everything and it quite literally could be used for something. In this correct me if I'm mistaken, but I feel that there is less to do with junk. I don't think Duct Tape is useful anymore?

What is junk for? Is it better just to sell it all? By junk I think they call it misc in this game, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

Selling or decorating with is what junk/misc items are for in Starfield. Raw materials take the place of scraping junk.

Your right, Junk is useless. Very early game some is worth a few credits, but hardly worth dragging around, unless you like collecting stuff. I think the Devs were trolling FO4 players with the Duct Tape, it isn't used for anything in this game. :steamhappy:
Yep, definitely didn't embrace the weird/wacky elements from the FO universe.
Besides being collected, and used in your own in-game physics experiments, a lot of the junk is just set-dressing. ie used in settlement decoration.

There are free mods that make a lot of the junk useful. Like one that makes Vacuum tape able to be turned into adhesive and fiber at a industrial workbench

Some junk is needed for research and crafting. Boom Pop Rhubarb anyone.
Starfield needs a Junk Jet.

Went back to Skyrim junk, instead of FO4. As stated above, vacuum tape was such a troll move. >.<
In Starfield junk is useless unless you want to use it to decorate your ship or outposts, or to sell for pocket change.

If you like building outposts / ships you might find some use with decoration.

I use Darkstar Manufacturing mod, it makes some use of random clutter, at least during the research phases. Otherwise, like someone said, it's back to Skyrim days where clutter is just clutter.

Be aware, between the junk you encounter, you may found crafting components too.

It's a learning process, you will recongnize quickly what is usefull ... .

junk is only 'useful' for decorating your space.

otherwise, some of it has an INSANE price per kilogram. The trouble is that collecting 100000000000 styrofoam containers to make it worthwhile is a herculean task, but even so, its quite valuable per unit weight. Most people just take a hard pass on that idea.
In the early game the "true" junk - especially all those foam cups and lids - even is one of the better loot items: When sold thanks to rounding you get 100 Cr per kg weight. Same for playing cards, note pads (though not -books) e.g., as you get roughly a sixth of the inventory-listed value, but a minimum of 1 Cr per sold item.

Much "true" loot pays quite a tad worse, especially common mineral ressources.

That is true. I stand corrected. As regards crafting components, such as Boom Pop Rhubarb mentioned by @tkwoods above, I don't consider them junk. I do love the fact that all that 'stuff' is lying around, and is collectable.

It's not really junk though, as it's actually a type of drink -- the licorice is the Holy Grail, btw...

It's not like all the pencils, batteries and other random clutter that we would collect religiously for lead in FO4/FO76...
