You were "Ship Security" checking the locks were in place.
RedTeam pentest/Social Engineering 101.
The more amazing thing is - you don''t believe it's feasible.
I'm pretty sure the entire plot and all quests were written by AI
AI... NPCs... same thing.
I mean any post investigation would deduce you were the only one with the key and the key was used in the theft. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that you either gave the key up willingly or it was stolen off your person. The persuasion system should have never been part of the quest. She should have said no and/or even had security escort you around for even asking such a stupid question.
If this would have happened then the quest would be easier if you don't ask her at all and instead find a way to get the key from her another way or maybe she lays it down when she goes to bed so you follow her, get her room code and then break in and get the key, steal the item, put the key back and exit the ship.
But if you did ask her then you would get escorted by security and you would have to elude them somehow or wait till they shift change or something and then steal the item.
There are so many ways they could have made this quest much better. You could have cozied up to one of the guests and somehow get them to create a distraction of sorts or maybe there is a guest that really hates the whole luxury snooty lifestyle and those around them and so they offer to help anyway they can. You sell the item and split the profits or you screw them over and just leave. If you screw them over later you get an event in space or on foot where they confront you....and so on.
It could have been really good. It really came off as quite lazy.
Wait till you find the the old colony ship and see the options that the resort owner gives you.
She does imply that.
multiple people at the party talk about how much of a pain it is to bring anywhere, its a useless award you can't even show people because its always under lock and key. She didn't want to take care of it anymore, she tells you "we won't get the insurance involved if it goes missing" because she didn't want the job anymore as it was a pain.
she gives you the key because she will simply claim "it was the crimson fleet" and she gets a fault free way to leave that job and not lose any of her social standing... its... not a complex scene or setup and they clearly state all this context many many times.
