Help, how to target enemy ships
Hi,

I am trying to finish the challenge of destroying 5 enemy ships while in targeting mode to unlock the Target Systems (something like that name) perk in the Tech tree. I tried pressing E while looking at an enemy ship and killing it, but it did not give me the 1/5 progress. It seems strange that I haven't already done this challenge because I thought I was using targeting mode this whole time I was playing. Please help, thank you

You need to press R after target locking a ship.. so don't just shoot until they're dead, wait until you have a target lock, then press R, then pew pew.

The UI should tell you when you locked on and press the button.

R is default for Targeting mode E is for Lock On.

You'll know when you have it activated as time slows and the ui changes, treat it as power shifting the modules on your ship, as in this is how you change the enemy system you wish to target (alt + arrow keys).

E to lock target and R to see the targeting UI. You have to destroy a ship while the targeting UI is up in order to get credit for the challenge.

You might have inadvertently changed the Key bind, if you changed the Default controls; check the Key bind menu.

Don't put turrets on your ship or you will never get it. Chances are you will blow everything up before you ever get a lock.

An easy way to complete that challenge is to use the simulater. You can go back whenever you want if you have that available in your game. That will help with getting used to the way targeting works and you don't have to worry about ship repairs and such.

Since you have a limited amount of targeting time before you have to reacquire the lock, my advice is to weaken the target's hull first, then engage targeting mode when you're close to finishing them off.

that is the beauty of turrets... specially the long range... it is a pity that they are limited to just a narrow track angle and not 360 degrees

Wow you guys gave me a seriously thorough set of responses but in actuality, I'm an idiot and I already unlocked the 1st rank of the targeting perk and I realize now that R is the target button. I thought the challenge was to unlock the 1st perk but it only tells me that challenge because I have ALREADY unlocked the 1st perk. Thank you all

I remember the simulator, I will go do that. Thank you for the suggestion. I had trouble finding pirates in space, I went to like 8 different planets

Yeah, I was really wanting gimbal style turrets. I settle for being able to point them backwards. since the "AI" will follow you from behind every time while you kill another target.
