why cant you choose your own starting perks?
has there ever been a bethesda game where you werent allowed to customize your class at the start? this game essentially forces you to choose a class instead of being able to make your own. even oblivion, a nearly 20 year old game let you create your own class and let you name it lol. why are you forced to choose a class that has a forced backstory attached to it?

I really tought the File not Found Background would have allowed me to manually select my starting skills but sadly that was a big nope. I acutally mis it, all the background atm ingame have things in it i would never wanted to start of with. But gotta play as the card are being handed.

The difference between Oblivion (and Morrowind) and Starfield is that you a limited amount of increases/level ups in the older games. Starfield let's you level up until you have skill points for everything, so initial skills don't matter in the long run.

Regarding the "forced background" you can opt for the data not found one that effectively lets you decide your own background for RP. You don't have to pick from one of the defined background occupations. The defined ones are also pretty loose, with primarily just being a prior job, rather than a life story.

That's how I see it just background story. It does not pigeonhole you into any class or way of playing.

They should have allowed you to choose skills with File Not Found. In the end it doesn't really matter though since there is no max level in the game.

The story is nice, but these background come with a set of 3 skills. In previous bethesda games we where able to choose our own skills that are going into that background. Its the starting skills we want to control not the background.

I think the point is backgrounds adds some flavor to dialogue, which doing a custom setup would not.

Well, you are kinda right, but tbh, you can level up so much and fast by just exploring planets/moons that you get all the skill points you need to get your favorite (starting)skills anyway.

And that's what my first paragraph covered.

Don't sweat the starting skills. You aren't in any way limited by them and can add in any skills you felt you should have started with by just past the end of the intro.

Instead pick the background that best fits the roleplay for your character. That will have a better payoff by giving you dialogue options relating to it. And if none of them fit, there's a background for that too.
