So tried EM weapons on the engines of a few ships, but I’m still splashing the whole ship….any suggestions?

Targeting skill.

You need to disable the engine with weapons that actually do hull damage. Once the shields and engines are disabled, hit the ship with the em weapons to keep the crew from repairing, and you can get into range to dock. (which also makes them stop shooting at you.....)

So keep the shields down, and ballistics on the engines ?

EM weapons take out systems without damage. You can use them on the engines after taking the shield down.

If you're going to use weapons that cause actual damage be careful with how much power you put into them as you can destroy the ship before taking out the subsystem you're targeting, I found this out the hard way.

I think the weapons do the same amount of damage, regardless of how much power they are fed, power level affects recharge time..... I think. :D

One of the early EM weapons you can get does basically no damage to anything but systems, I think it's like 1 damage per shot to shield and hull. Some of the others do more hull damage so if you're having an issue check what your gear is.

As I said I found out the hard way.

I tried taking out a specific (quest related) ship with full power directly targeting the engines when locked on. I'd take it down to one bar then every time the next shot would destroy it. After multiple attempts with this happening I dropped the power level down and tried again and took out the engines without destroying the ship.

when i've used EM weapons - i just blasted away.. never tried them** targeting mode.. just shift power from my kill guns to EM and pew.. pew them. mostly worked fine.

a few time they were so heavily dmged that even EMs blew them up to fast.

Interesting. :D

When I want to take a ship, I use my main weapons till the shields are down, (with the engines targeted.... usually, one shot after shields are down takes 'em out.) then switch to the EM weapon until I am in range to dock.

As Lithurge points out, use whatever to take out the shields, then go into targeting mode, target the engines, and pew pew away with EM weapons. I'm running two Fulminator 8000 Suppressors and disable engines pretty much as soon as the shields drop (and I'm in range). Then dock quickly while tanking the damage... too much of a hassle to EM their weapons as well.

Frankly boarding/taking over ships this way is a bit too easy, wish I'd known starting out.

Their names are all generic nonsense it was like "spark 750" or something. Key is to check the damage to different things in the ship builder, it should tell you what it does to each.

EM damage goes right through shields. No need to take them down at all if you don't want too.
