Why am I getting 33fps on low settings with a 4070?
Just built a new computer today specifically to play starfield, I finally boot up the game and my fps is 28-34.

Computer specs SSD: Evo 9701tb GTX 4070 i9 12900k 64gb ddr5 ram Drivers are up to date, running windows 10 with drivers up to date. Had 2 monitors plugged in at first, now just running 1 to try to troubleshoot but no noticeable difference. Nvidia fps overlay shows gpu at 95% even on low settings, giving me 28-34ish fps.

With all settings on low and sliders all the way down with my monitor at 1440p I get 28-34 fps. If I put everything on ultra, my fps barely goes down. I've played the first hour of the game like this, and nothing has changed, just horrible unplayable fps. I have no idea what's going on, but I'm sorely disappointed.

Have you updated all drivers? I've got a similar system with a 4070 and I get between 60-100 fps on 1440p Ultrawide. I'm on Win 11. What kind of performance are you getting on other games?

That is odd.

For Comparison I'm running a Ryzen 7 5800X3D 32g of ram, Asus Tuf Rtx 4070Ti, Win11 pro with the game and windows installed on a Gen4 nvme.

I'm hovering around 55-90+ fps depending on what's going on. 1440p default Ultra with motion blur disabled.

Go into your bios and turn on resizeable bar. I did that just today and it gave me a few more Fps. Maybe it will help your overall situation.

Something else to check is that you're temps aren't going crazy causing the cpu to throttle.

Yeah that's about right.

Game isnt optimized well and often drops low (sub 40) even on new systems.

Since you have a 40 series card you have access to Nvidia Frame generation now and can use this mod which will give you a massive FPS boost:

OP mentions they just built the PC, my guess would be some mistake applying thermal paste, maybe forgotten to connect CPU fans?

Thermal throttling sounds like a reasonable explanation.

Because you're doing something wrong.

Nonsense. I get no less than 70fps at 1440p, at 100% render scale too. 90+ at 80%, without frame gen too. Can't be arsed to install the mod.

I'm on a 3060 I get more that on high. So you're looking at a software or driver issue on your end.

While it's always worth checking thermal paste, these turkeys will suggest everything under the sun to you before admitting that this is a sub 60fps game on most systems without severe compromises or resolution scaling.

The game turns those on by default so most people probably don't even notice.

If you have this fps everywhere is some problem on your pc.

Like other said check temperature and eventually check fans(all working and if mounted in the right "direction") and thermal paste.

But the game have problem of optimization specially in specific places.

Bethesda already confirmed in the last patch notes they are working for better performance.

"We’re also working closely with Nvidia, AMD, and Intel on driver support, and each update will include new stability and performance improvements."

Yup. Everyone has admitted they dropped the ball on this.

Agreed that the problem is not OPs BRAND NEW computer.

30fps on a 4070 absolutely is OPs "brand new computer".

34 fps is an absolutely believable %1 low for starfield. Especially in certain sections.

Get real.

Yeah starfield have optimization problem and bethesda confirmed this in the last patch notes.

But 30fps or less with a 4070 on low everywhere isn't normal even for the problems of starfield.

From what the Op write, he have around 30 fps even in the intro part, which isn't normal.

Bethesda's game engine is swampware. It's a modified version of Gamebryo, which has been around since 1997.

Seriously, don't get caught up in the trap of thinking your PC is to blame. Your PC should easily blitz this game, but it won't, because Bethesda continues to neglect their engine and refuses to use anything else because they're already familiar with their tools.

I've seen this game hit 29 in benchmarks on 40 series cards. One of them is one that guys channel above.

It all depends on what settings he's using and what part of the game he was in
