Starfield vs Fallout 4
Which do you prefer and why? To be honest while Starfield is on a whole different scale I just feel the world in fallout feels a bit more lived in. There's less people overall but when you watch people doing their daily activities or so many random encounters of people trying to survive in the wasteland it just feels that bit more magical. I'm still early in Starfield so will see how it progresses but this is just my first impressions so far. I get that it needs to capture the vastness and emptiness of space and that more NPC's means less detail such as them no longer having dynamic daily activities

Fallout 4 in every way.
# 1 reason, the game world. Procedural could be fine if done right but Starfield has no static maps to explore just endless square full of randomly placed junk and loads of emptyness, how many times have I cleared the exact same sciene facility?.

Every location in Fallout 4 is truely unique. 7 days to die has good map generation, 10x more impressive than this game for a 10$ indy game.

Characters, Starfield main crew is painful. Fallout 4 has a good variety of follower even if off course their lines get old.

Dark themes vs safe.. Pirates and spacers all day vs raiders and super mutants no contest.

Fallout 4 has survival mode. But Starfield with no fast travel would break anyone's will to live.

Inventory.. no contest. Pip boy used low quality objects = smart, Starfield use full quality object = dumb as heck and leads to so much extra load. Infinite junk storage + a use for it instead of just being vendor trash.

Settlements vs outpost, also no contest, spent hundreads of hours making settlements and enjoyed seeing them feel "alive".

I am sure I am forgetting a lot of aspects. Fallout 4 for me is easy 9/10, Starfield 6/10.

Fallout 4. More enemy variety. Better exploration. Better blood & gore.

To be honest while Starfield is on a whole different scale I just feel the world in fallout feels a bit more lived in.

This is normal. A smaller place feels like it is filled out more and there is more stuff per square meter. Some people feel overwhelmed with great open spaces or a larger scale. The good part is, you can play it in different ways.

Just concentrate on the quests, cities and point of interests. It will lead you to from smaller place to smaller place and it will be less overwhelming.

It just feels like such a step backward as decades ago we got games where NPC's had daily routines which made them feel fully alive. In Starfield NPC's are static and have no homes, no routines, no lives. I understand they can't do this with bigger cities but at least make it possible for more permanent NPC's like what RDR2 does. The world doesn't live without you. The static nature of it means you feel like you are in the Truman show. It doesn't feel like a Bethesda game for me

Fallout had a better story, a more compelling beginning, and better companions. Starfield has better combat and itemization. It's hard to call with mods for one and not for the other, but I think Starfield has the potential to beat out Fallout if, and only if, modders put out great story and companion content, not just guns and graphics.

I just tried Fallout 4 a couple hours ago, to answer that question for myself ... and boy, does Fallout 4 look outdated and plays clumsy.

I never played Fallout 4 passed a few hours, since it never grabbed me, like the other Beth games. But, compared with Starfield ... there really is no comparison?

I highly recommend players to turn on Fallout 4 and put the comparisons they make "it's just like Fallout 4 - it's worse than Fallout 4 - it looks like Fallout 4" to rest, after they have actually played (vanilla) Fallout 4 for an hour again.

Without factoring mods for either game: Starfield over Fallout 4. Despite the terrible story and worse companions, I'm having more fun with the unmodded game itself than I did with Fallout 4. I will admit that part of that might be that I had high expectations for Fallout 4 after New Vegas and Skyrim. I went into Starfield, on the other hand, prepared to be underwhelmed!

I started playing this game I picked up in the sales called Elex. It's reminds me a bit of Starfield but believe it or not is a lot more fun to play then Starfield.

Elex is great. Punishing but very rewarding

Remember the Darker Nights mod for Fallout 4? Add the mod that illuminates creatures, and it was like a totally different game.

Fast forward to 2023, nights are still as bright as day.

I loved the power armor in FO4. Also fighting the Brotherhood of Steel was very fun.
The space suits in Starfield look amazing and they remind me of power armor. And the pirates remind me of the BoS.
But there's so much to do in Starfield, I have to say Starfield is far better than FO4.

Have to agree (and with many of the other points made in this thread). I hope DLC and mods will improve Starfield but I'm worried that the core (non-)characters and the big, bland, procedurally generated game world will be more of a liability than an asset for anyone trying to build on these foundations.

I just expected more. I mean since Fallout 4 we have had games like Kingdom Come deliverance, RDR2 which really pushed the boundaries in making their games feel alive. Starfield feels more like Cyberpunk which isn't even an RPG. I wanted more depth more the characters and NPC's to make the world feel alive. At least on a similar scale to Fallout 4

Fallout 4 was frigging great, loved it.. i really could not choose between fallout and starfield, they are imho 2 different games. YES both are bethesda RPG with extreme similarities. Starfield got me so hooked i am playing it every second i possible can find to play it. But same was with fallout 4 too. Bethesda just done great games always. Only really bad thing from bethesda is the frigging bugs, infinite loading screen in fallout 4 and starfield got some random crashes.. sometimes i can go like 20 hours until a crash comes but fallout 4 had those frigging infinite loading screens every 15mins to 3 hours so it was 10x more buggy and it infuriated me.

In the end i think both are equally good games in their own way. and i think its a lot matter of taste what you like more. ofc fallout 4 is older but it had the great bethesda quests that i love and all neat hidden thing all over the place. but seems like starfield got hidden stuff etc too but the world is so much bigger its much harder to find those hidden things.

I'm 161 hours into Starfield and hands-down Fallout 4 is the better game since your choices, character build and attributes actually made a difference in the game world, and although you are limited to the Boston area, the sense of exploration and discovery is infinitely bigger with uniquely crafted locations behind every hill and door.

The main quest line is short as hell in Starfield and only padded out with soft level-gating forcing you to trudge through the LITERALLY EXACT same bases and caves on various samey looking planets with the same fauna and flora despite being light years apart.

Nothing you do matters to the forced one-way narrative and they will kill your most beloved companion just to slap you in the face with it, then at the end kill any immersion you had left with pulling a "bro, multiverse bro" making it all feel infinitely pointless.

Starfield is Bethesda's jumping the shark moment combined with Rian Johnson's brand killing Star Wars train wreck, there's no way in hell any sane person will ever trust them with their time and investment after this, all the bad reviews were right, they're done.
