Wider sections can be done by building cargo modules, no need to build a useless room if you can fill it with cargo space full of loot
I also assume this is for people that want to walk inside the parts in the ship. Can you walk through the cargo modules? If not, that would be the purpose of the halls, most likely.
I can tell you, I am very grumpy from all the trolls and admittedly am snapping at people. I'm kinda-sorta sorry I'm doing it, but I'm also just peeved enough to not really care. When people don't seem to have an agenda in their post, then I'm not on my guard. If that's what you call "asking questions better", then yes I concur it will be helpful!
You can use them 'cosmetically' to get the interior/exterior layout you want without making the ship super heavy. I'm not saying it's the most logical choice, or the best choice, but I do think there is SOME sense to it.
Cargo modules do not allow connections to the sides. That makes them useless for wider construction. I have extensively gone through the parts for variants.
