The DLSS mod install broke my game
Installed the DLSS mod per rockpapershotgun instructions, the game booted fine but didnt notice a difference in fps or graphics and it had disabled xbone controller and steam overlay.

Uninstalled the mod and verified cache and game wont boot in both desktop or big picture.

Just deleted the whole folder and redownloading now since saves are in the steam cloud. Will update status in a bit once its done downloading but this sucks.

Moral is wait for official support. Although I haven't seen others with the same issue, it basically lets me click the green play button but closes it self after 2 seconds instead of booting the game.

You probably left some files behind when removing the mod. it adds quite a few different dll's and if you have some in there but not the whole package it will cause what you are experiencing. Steam's "repair files" does not remove extra files.

Not sure which of the two DLSS mods you are talking about, but neither overwrites ANY of the Starfield files.

Simply deleting the files and folders you added is enough to revert the game to it's original state ... unless, you tinkered manually with your StarfieldPrefs.ini file ... or forgot to delete the dlls.

Deleting the file will generate a new one at next start.

No need to redownload 150GB again.

It's an imperfect mod on top of an imperfect game.

Official DLSS will be nice

wonder if it will have official frame gen

Yup, aside from that hassle a lot of people reported crashes. Since I already have to deal with normal crashes I figured I`d rather wait for official support.

Think this is it. Thanks I think I missed extra files outside the mod folder itself...

I get that, its just a bit simpler than looking for the exact files and I have decent internet so it takes about 10-15 min to DL..

I'm using the LukeFZ free one from Nexusmods https://www.nexusmods.com/starfield/mods/761?tab=description

My preferred way to install mods like this is to unzip the main mod into a folder, throw in the two nvidia dll files into the streamline folder as described.

I *then* copy the whole mod folder contents into the starfield folder in one go. That way , if it it doesn't work... you can uninstall the mod by right clicking in file explorer and just going "Undo copy"

I got crashes also and just removed the files. I don't know if it could have conflicted with my gamma mod? I had a gamma mod to darken the game and I don't think they would conflict but I couldn't think of why else it would crash. Oh, and I had the inventory mod that allows more detailed inventory item information. So it was just those three mods total.

It all brings back memories of me breaking my game in Skyrim and Fallout 4. Lol

Yes, it could conflict with the gamma mod depending on which version of the DLSS mod you used and what the gamma mod even is.

oh i am back in action :) think I will try to finish the main story before messing with mods again

Yep, use mods with care. Some are very nice, but some have unforeseen consequences.

The alternate UI mod is way better than the original UI, btw. Sometimes I wonder how modders create better stuff than the developers, and in merely days instead of months?

You can adjust gamma without any mod!

Just edit the StarfieldPrefs.ini and add a line:

[Display]
fGamma=2.4000"

(2.4 is the default. Lesser number is darker).

======

I had issues with both DLSS mods on my RTX 4060. One gave me a black screen when also using 'Dynamic Resolution' and VRS. The other one made the framerate and frames stutter when using 'Frame Generation'.

Since the latest Starfield update, the other day, I tried the "FSR2Bridge Mod" again ... and it runs smooth like butter with 'Frame Generation' enabled. Gives me even higher framerate than vanilla FSR2. Might also have to do with the Beth update.

But, agree, in general. Let the Nvidia and Bethesda guys work on an 'official' implementation. They can implement the DLSS library without using 'hacks' and 'hooks' and optimize the rendered frames.

What I would not recommend - for the first time in my life - is "ReShade". I love ReShade, but it uses it's one custom-baked D3D dll and this causes all sorts of problems, not only when using DLSS libraries. It creates conflicts, because you have competing libraries, all doing their post-processing attempts on top of each other (official game libraries, DLSS injection, ReShade wrapper ...).
