Do extractors work when you're away?
I built and powered an iron extractor and it worked when I was next to it. It extracted 16 iron.

Then I left the planet and came back an hour later and it still had 16 iron. Why didn't it extract more while I was away? Am I missing something here?

If it stopped producing, then you probably need to build storage for it, then link it to the storage. Or the storage is full.

I think your extractor is full, build a storage and connect it to the extractor

Because the amount any of these things can hold is sadly very low. You need external storage, and you're going to need a LOT of them.

It's stupid how little the different outpost structures can hold. But a lot of things in this game are stupid.

Each storage container holds ~150 units, so if you have a decent setup there at the field and are getting 15+ minerals per minute then your container is going to fill up in 10 minutes or less. You'll need like 6 of them or more. 900 iron (i.e. how much you'd be extracting in 1 hour of gameplay) is a considerable amount of iron as far as outpost building needs. You'll probably be pipelining it into manufacturing some other kind of intermediate resource though.
