Still can't smoke cigarettes, good job Bethesda!
Of all the different substances both legal and illegal one can partake in in Starfield, from alcohol to military grade combat stims to hallucinogenic fish oil, Bethesda still won't let anyone smoke a cigarette.

Packs of cigarettes are all over the place as a misc item to sell for a bit of credits, but you can't smoke 'em!

Fun fact: Hitler banned (or tried to) the smoking of cigarettes in Nazi Germany.

True, yet meth was widespread and popular among the soldiers before the doctors bothered to test it for side effects. Makes you think...

On topic though, you shouldn’t be THAT surprised.

Entertainment media in general has been moving away from showing the smoking of cigarettes for decades.

And it was more or less decided that smoking should not be shown in a “positive” context at all.

If they’re even “featured”, they’re usually in the hands of “the bad guys” or sometimes the “anti-hero”.

And when it’s the anti-hero they usually find some way to show the negatives of smoking (ex: John Constantine and his terminal lung cancer), or throw in some kinda scene where the character quits.

Games usually steer real clear of letting the player smoke. They don’t want to even risk inviting a wave of controversy and lawsuits claiming that they’re promoting it and inspiring kids to do it.

I don’t know if it still is, but the organization leading the anti-smoking movement was once incredibly influential and had some serious firepower behind it (money, expert lawyers, politicians, and various people in positions of authority in the entertainment spheres).

The only game I can even think of that let you do it was Red Dead Redemption 2 (and maybe the first too, I can’t remember). Even then though it carried an instantaneous negative effect and the animation lasted like a second.

Don't forget Metal Gear Solid. Solid Snake always carries his lucky smokes, which while they help him detect laser tripwires, also give him a slight amount of damage over time.

Um, cyberpunk 2077 wants to let you know that your main character can smoke in that game

Nazi meth was 1/1000 of the street meth strength today. It was called Pervitin. If you think Nazi meth was bad, you should read about Britain's attempt to counter it. I don't remember it's name but it not only made their soldiers fearless but suicidal. They run off into gun fire and don't return.

The Nazi version let soldiers keep their wits but fight for days on end. Directly coincided with Germany's Blitzkrieg tactics so there was at least a method to the madness.

You could say it was widespread in the military due to how many pills were made and issued, but many soldiers were reluctant to take it. It's main use stemmed from officers directing its use for certain engagements. Most officers had their own drug of choice. One more popular than Pervitin was morphine.

Man, we give the same stuff to our kids. It's called adderall.

They're still super expensive though. Seriously, I have a rule of thumb to only pick up junk that's worth 1000x its weight and cigarettes are one of the only items on that list lol
Ignosius Sep 15, 2023 @ 2:26am
The real question is why they're worth so much if no one smokes them.
