Why can I never take my helmet off?

No matter if I am in my ship, on a world with people walking around breathing normally, I start to suffocate if I don't always have a space suit on. What gives?

I have not run into this issue at all. Even On kreet of all places in fact.
Could be a bug, could be your character has some affliction.
Maybe make a bug report.

I have a bunch of different helmets. I have to always have one on or I get the red screen of gasping. If I am in a city with parks, trees, etc., everyone walking around normally ...there I am, in a space suit or I can't breathe.

There is a button under the helmet inventory where you can have it auto unequip when in breathable locations like your ship. It actually stays on so you don't have to worry about it but shows the characters face.

Maybe try clicking the "helmet off in breathable locations" (or whatever it's called) toggle in settings...

Go to your helmet section in your inventory and at the bottom you get the option to toggle helmet of in areas.

It's not mentioned, so it needs to be asked: Do you have the "hide helmet in breathable air" option toggled when looking at your helmet inventory? (There's also one for space suit in settlements... even though companions opt for apparel in all breathable, non-ZG situations.)

No, I never noticed that. Now that I tried it, I am suffocating in or out of my ship with my suit/helmet on or off.
