Feels like a PG13 title

I've touched on this in other threads but I don't think I've ever encountered an 18 rated game in the UK/17 rated game in the US and have it play so safe - It feels like a PG13 title.

The quests lack adult themes and depth, the gore of the Fallout & Skyrim games is gone and as far as I can recall there is zero foul language in the game...

Bearing in mind the game is marketed to adults are we seeing a softening up or adult themes here? If we are why?

Compare the themes of Fallout 1 & 2 and its night and day, Fallout 2 especially is extremely dark and adult in comparison to this and both have the same age ratings difference being Fallout 1 & 2 was made in 1997 & 1998 respectively and Starfield was released in the current year.

What's happened here?

Sure, but it is a matter of the "type" of content in question.

I'm sure there are plenty of G and PG movies that are "quality content." Just as I am sure that there are plenty of R and NC-17 movies that are "poor content."

Nevertheless, when something is advertised "for adults" as entertainment, there is an expectation that the content of that entertainment will deal with certain themes, and contain a certain amount of explicitness, that entertainment advertised for children simply won't.

In other words, there is an expectation that the adult audience will be treated "as adults."

OK here's the problem, though: You are shooting people with high-powered future guns and lasers and there is no gore other than some minor blood splatter. Also, the most hardened criminal pirates talk like they are 12-year-olds trying not to swear around their parents while also sounding cool in front of their friends on Discord. I think the biggest problem here is that you can't even kill remotely important npcs. You don't even get a quest failed like in the old bethesda games, they simply can't die.

I was referring to this particular games rating. Certainly the Sex between married people should not elevate it to above pg 13. Other games have done more.

Now killing bad guys even if they identify as they/them is just normal for a game anymore.

Yep. I miss the days of being insulted by bandits in FO1 and FO2 calling me all sorts of nasty names as I gunned them down with my trusty 0.223 pistol.
