Grav Jumping In Combat
What’s the trick to this?

Sometimes you’re able to grav jump away during combat, and other times if you try you’ll get a message saying “you cannot grav jump during combat” and it won’t let you.

Depends when you've locked your coords in already.
Had pirates attack me after I pressed 'Jump', but my grav-drive power was still locked to '0'

I’ve been able to jump away while being actively shot at (meaning I opened the map and selected a place to jump during combat), but then other times it won’t let me.

I swear I’ve also seen one of those load screen help tips that tells you you can grav jump away if you’re outmatched.

Maybe it only works if there’s a certain amount of distance between you and the closest enemy ship?

Maybe it only works if you jump to another planet within the same system?

You have to make sure you are trying to Grav Jump, not trying to Fast Travel. You can't Fast Travel during combat.

I think that means, for example, you have to jump out of your current system. That always works for me. Just pick a nearby star and jump to it.

In combat - have energy on your grav drive - press F (Scanner mode) target a distant planet with E and then jump. Fast travel doesnt work.

you can try not being a wussy and fighting back when you get pirated. I mean, it's not hard.

You need to fast travel to another system that is not a specific location on a planet cuz then you just jump there but not actually "fast travel". It's a little iffy at first but once you realize how it works you can escape any fight if you wanted to.

This is more for those occasional instances where you’ve done absolutely nothing wrong, but then travel to Jemison and literally EVERY SINGLE SHIP becomes hostile and starts attacking you.

This has happened to me twice now - no bounty, no contraband, no evil shenanigans committed…unless I ran over a space chicken by accident upon entry without noticing…

Kinda like that one random event in space where you’ve got a few Freestar ships engaging pirates and you decide to hop in and give them a hand…but then attacking the pirate ships somehow makes the Freestar hostile towards you.

Also, on the same topic sorta, I would’ve sworn I saw a load screen tip that said if you’re being attacked by a government ship (any that can arrest you) you can Hail them and turn yourself in. I’ve only been able to do this once and it was after the ship went hostile on me but before it started shooting at me. Any gov ships that start shooting can’t be hailed.

I’m just realizing now how many times I’ve inadvertently broken the law in this game lol

sorry completely untrue , depends of absolutely nothing, first assign max power to your grav drive then open the map during combat , drink a coffee , select another system (but don't go in the detail) and then jump it works 100% of the time (if your ship isn't destroyed between the countdown but with max bars it goes fast)

this... all others who say it depends are wrong, that is correct

Yep, have to grav jump to a new system.

If you're in an A Class Starship, with the 2nd Engine skill, you can outrun any ship in the game. so if you get into a furball just boost straight and then you can take some time to collect yourself.

Nice fast ship and just boot to 6000 range, hopefully you can get away.
