Because you don't know how to get there until the game tells you how to get there. It also labels it unexplored because you have not yet visited some (or all) of the planets along the route. Without this information you would spend a great deal of time getting to a chosen goal by guessing which star systems to use to create an efficient route. You can still do it that way if you prefer, but it'll take a lot longer. Not so dumb an idea, right?

You have systems that have not merely been visited and mapped but have planets with hundreds of structures built on them.

It makes precisely zero sense for you to be unable to travel to those systems directly.

Maybe just to give you reason to visit closer star system that you didn't visit. Progression is better than just making everything available all at once. I know the city of Cannes exists, but it doesn't mean I know the route for it.

It's unexplored by YOU. The intention from a gameplay perspective is to prevent the player from just bypassing systems to get the one you want/need early on. Like passing through the Kryx system without going there first.

The way the galaxy map is designed though is nice. Off white/grey (unlit) stars are ones you can go to, but haven't been there yet. Red stars you cannot travel to yet until you explore more of the route. And white (lit) stars are the ones you've explored. I'm sure you already knew that, was just pointing that out, and maybe why it's good to see the whole galaxy map even though you cannot get to all systems right away.

Wait until you go NG+ and it becomes unexplored AGAIN making a dumb idea even dumber.

This is only one of the many dumb ideas in the game that intentionally waste your time.

The player is never discovering a planet for the first time, all the maps are in the ships system. It would be one thing if we cant make it to a distant planet in one jump, and require the bigger fuel tanks and grav drives. But it doesnt need to be a road trip and have us stop at every tourist attraction along the way.

Its a fast travel mechanic.

Your character hasnt explored (==experienced) that route yet.

Do the trip one time with grav jumps, land somewhere in the destination system. Next time you want to go there, you can select a location and fast travel. Similar to what you do in every game with fast travel (go to location, unlock fast travel point, now you can there go directly from the map).

It's confusing at first in SF because grav jumps are very similar to fast travel, but they are different things.

When you go to somewhere "unexplored", the grav jumps are precisely limited by grav drives and fuel tanks, you don't have to stop at every distraction.

You can totally travel directly to them, doing grav jumps. You just can't use fast travel.

Skyrim did this with the cities. It's a game design choice to show you what you have to explore without setting an unrealistic expectations of the world size

I thought Starfield fast travel was supposed to be unfun. Now you want to do it more?

Not having the option is bad but the implementation of fast travel is also bad.
