Starship weapon slots?
I've been looking into upgrading my starship to be as powerful as possible in battle. All the videos I have seen with big titles like "BEST SHIP EVER" always look pretty good, but they all use three types of weapon, or at least they always seem to use missiles no matter what.
However I've found that it's actually been much better for me to use just particle beam weapons on at least two of the slots, or even all three if you have access to a very good reactor.
I don't want to act like I am the only one who does this though. I have seem a few posts about people using this method as well.
I guess the reason I posted this here was to ask: How far can it be taken? Clearly this method vaporizes ships even at high levels, but just how quickly can it happen? Like what blown out stuff and perks do you need?
The first step is finding the highest total power you could ever get from a reactor. Then you need to find out which weapons are the most powerful in terms of dps, and then place them right spots on the ship to get optimal shot placement (it helps a lot to have a very close grouping). Lastly you need to figure out how many duplicates you can make, and of which weapons. Some you can make three, and others many more, so it's a few numbers to run there too.
At any rate. Post about this if you've had any success with this method, or just let me know if I'm full of it, and have been massively underselling the other weapon setups.

Turrets.
1. (weapongroup 1) fixed forward-mounted weapons
2. (weapongroup 2) high-energy turrets (drain your reactor)
3.(weapongroup 3) projectile turrets (slower recoverytime)

or you could just get rid of weapongroup1.
But then your ship becomes a: "take no prisoners" ship.

Don't use missiles. (unless it's forward mounted, point-blank and ramming)

It really depends on what game setting you play on in how much you need to pay attention to the details of your ship. Very Hard setting, requires a much more effort in designing it for your play style and survival capabilities. Also if you want to capture ships. EM weapons are important for that.

Turrets are ideal for those who are not that good with eye/hand reflexes and slow to react. In my case, they are much better at hitting a target than I am. :P So I use 8 turrets and all are the 4000 range ones.

But you want one weapon group to be manual fire ones. Just in case. Which ones depends also on your skills and play style. The Vanguard Obliterators Auto Projectors are considered by many as the best manual fire weapons, as 6 can be mounted to your ship and they have a high fire rate and good range. Turrets benefit a lot from the Skills for such.

That's a lot of donuts.
I haven't had great success with turrets yet, but maybe I'll try this layout.

In the midgame, where I don't have all that much power to throw around, I like having one missile group. With one pip of power, you get one full salvo. Timed right you can do some nice burst damage.

I'm liking 6 Vanguard Obliterators as my primary weapon group. EM weapons on group 2, which I don't power up unless there's just one enemy left and I feel like boarding, and missiles on 3. So that's only 13 pips for weapons, leaving plenty for shields and engines.

With more power, swapping the missiles for turrets is better. And if I'm done with capturing things, might as well just throw another six Obliterators on there instead of the EM guns. That takes a lot of weapon mounts, of course.

In practice, I haven't yet tried the 12-Obliterator loadout. I can't think of anything that could survive that much dakka for long, though.

The three highest DPS weapons in the game are: Vanguard Obliterator Autoprojector, PBO-175 Auto Helion Beam and Exterminator 95MeV Auto Helion Beam. All three combined in full 12 pip groups give you 1285 damage per second. Then you can buff those numbers further with the particle weapons skill to the point where one second of continuous fire breaks any enemy shield you will come across and another second destroys your target.

Is it necessary? Nope. Would it be more useful to also run a few turrets and maybe EM weapons? Probably. Is it fun? HELL YES!

That's a ship I would take into Kryx, and take on the Crimson fleet. :) I may have to try that.

I use missiles, as the Atlatl 280 whatevers in pair, do over 500 points of damage. I HAVE noticed a bug though.... The launcher clearly shows it hold 4 missiles. You fire on missile from each launcher per button press, but, THE GAME sees it as firing two missiles. I get two shots, then I have to wait for reload......

I rember I use just one weapon type you get from simply joining the UC fleet, its called Vanguard autoturret or something, its no automatic its just called that way they have best dps and a long range and its just one kind of weapon so its like u just hold one button and watch things explode ;p

You can't have more then 3 weapons per group so you can have up to 9 across the 3 weapon slots

Your weapon groups can't use more than 12 power. Some weapons only require 2 power, and I have mounted six of 'em.

But you can fire by weapon type not group right ?

anytime I mounted more then 3 per group or have more then 9 across all 3 slots it gives me a error you have too many weapons

You can only have three different types of weapons. For any one group, they can't use more than 12 power. (unless, mods.....) If the game is telling you you have too many weapons, then you are breaking one of those rules.

yea the 3 of each type I knew about, but didn't know the number you could have per group was based on power, thats why I was confused when someone above said they had 6 I never knew that

Yeah, The Vanguard Obliterators only require 2 power, so, you can mount six of 'em. :D Class A weapons, so, you can get them at low level too... and at low level, (early game) they are devastating. :D

On A class the pb30 all the way, not the auto. You can shoot for 3000 meter distance and can have unlimited fire ability, or no cool down. Its kind of op, I'm feeling pretty powerful in my noob A class.
And thats the only weapon I'm using, no need for anything else.
