Can't sell captured ship?
So I captured a Crimson Fleet Wraith. The thing is only worth 31895, but I can't sell it anyway.

I was going to register it (to see if you need to register a ship before you can sell it) but they want 26773 to register it. Even if I could sell it after a register it (which I don't know yet) that's a huge chunk of profit gone!

So question: Do you have to register a ship before you can sell it? Or is there somewhere you can sell it for full price?

you have to register before you modify or sell a ship. needless to say, pirating ships isn't a very good way to get money in the game. you are better off boarding a ship, kill everyone, loot them and the ship, then blow up the ship and snag the random loot from blowing up the ship. only reason to really take the ship is because you want to keep the ship.

It helps to max out the economy perk and focus on specific expensive ships.

You can't even sell it at Neon, or The Den?

I would say it's not worth it after all the fighting you have to do to keep it, but I've taken tougher bounties for less. so.

nope. the option to sell doesn't show up until you register.

Ship piracy is a good way to get yourself a free ship to modify.

it's less lucrative as a money making method.

Farming weapons from Pirates seems to be the sweet spot between quick and easy.

I read somewhere that you can part the ship & get money that way. Maybe gut the weapons, extra modules, & keep it flyable by swapping in a lesser grav drive & reactor?

The short answer is: no.

I have to imagine that it's because it would make credits meaningless, as it's so so easy to get your hands on ships. Not all ships, space encounters can be trickier, but you can farm high level ships pretty easily, even at low level.

If you're going to grab ships, high level ships are worth more after registration, but it's still not a lot. Don't bother with low lvl/cheap ships, though sometimes they contain some contraband, so if you just feel like eliminating some enemies, earning some XP and getting some contraband to sell at The Den/wherever, go for it.

The main value in ships, is their repurposing. Strip down/sell ships you don't want, sell all the content etc, and keep the 'good' ships (eg: ecliptic claymore, esp II/III) to use as your base ship.

you'll make way more gathering loot from enemy occupied POIs than you'll get trying to capture and sell ships. not even remotely close.

That could actually work. May not be worth the time, but I could see that netting you a few more creds per ship.

When editing a ship, removing a module does give you back positive credits.

yes but the return rate is VERY low. often the money you get back is far less than it would cost to replace with cheaper parts

I said "strip" in my last post, and yeah that's what I was referring to - it's definitely not obvious to new players/ship-builders though:

@OP when you "delete" parts in ship builder it is treated like 'credit'. It's not a lot, but watch the Total in top-right: when it's red, you'll owe the vendor those credits, when it's blue, they'll owe you.

yeah but the ship still has to be a viable ship in order to finish the build.

just way better off looting and selling gear.

it's absurd, but that's how they set the game up. it would be like highjacking a commercial truck and finding out you'll make more money selling the drivers boots and watch than you'll get for the truck

Yeah in general it seems Bethesda had a hard time balancing an economy system thats a bit of a challenge with the ability to nick any ship you want
It may be a bit disappointing for players looking for tons of free money- but it probably saves the economy of the game as a whole

You have to register it to sell it which makes piracy pointless outside of getting your first decent ship that you then modify in Ship Builder.

You are better off farming bounties at POIs to get creds.

This is by design. They didn't want people to be able to make credits that quickly by selling captured ships. So the registration fee is high to narrow profits. However, there is a difference between registering at a technician and registering from your ship list. Press tab and view ships, see the registration price from there, it is less than at a technician. But the profit is still slim.

The profit is the same. You can test this yourself by selling individual components and just keep it flyable, add it all up and see the sell price of your bare bones ship, it amounts to the same as if you just sold it as is.
