Spherical Planets?
We know there is a automated landing sequence, means loading the planet etc.
We know space and planet are separated,
We know Bethesdas Engine worked a lot with Cells.

So I don’t think the planets will be spherical, I think they will more work like a (normal) map but seamlessly.

So far I found nothing about that.

But the landing (loading) sequence is a high indicator for that theory.

The planets are made out of several tiles wrapped around a sphere.

Which means the planets are indeed spherical and you can walk around them.

Todd Howard gave a ~3h Interview and talked about it.

This is what I am thinking also.

Choose spot from space, land roughly in area representing that spot. We get given an area to explore bounded by cliffs and water and so on.

End result being we can't actually run a full circle by heading in a straight direction if we try.

no they will be flat like the globe

I do think we can walk in one direction and get to the point we started, I just think they simulate the sphere by having a seamlessly map instead of a real sphere.

I would not see a big problem with that solution if it works well.

It would just explain the loading break.

Maybe on some smaller planets? But if they use cliffs and water...I am expecting the old invisible walls we've seen before.

And with larger planets you might feel like you've walked in one direction but I expect cliffs/water/other things will turn your direction around a few times.

Seems like nobody sees the extent of this theory if it really works like that.

Especially for the modding community.

Skyrim, Fallout etc. they all work like that. You click on that door, you get (teleported) to another cell (dungeon etc.)
So why shouldn’t I expect that Starfield will be different on that point. You click on that planet, you get (teleported) to another cell (planet).

So far I found only 2 more people out there asking the exact same but kinda important question.

Finally, some actual, "down-to-earth" realism in my fantasy game! So I assume I'll be able to interact with all the 100% real and confirmed, underground civilizations here on earth, such as the Illuminaughti reptilians and their main rivals, the crab people....crab people...crab people?!

Please confirm, so I don't pre-order the game for nothing. :dos2skull:

Don't pre-order the game. There is no reason to do so other than, well, let's keep it civil.

Correct me if wrong, but read/saw from NMS dev interview years ago that NMS planets are not truly 'spherical' either but using some game engine code/tech to turn cube terrain into what we see in game. It is 3D in the sense you can walk around a planet apparently, but AFAIK not truly spherical, and obviously it doesn't matter to the experience.

It's finally over. After two weeks of running and jumping across Dudenbeaumodeme I finally returned to my ship. My heart was pounding during those last few minutes as I made my way over one final mountain. It was still where I left it, resting in the snow. I took a final victory lap around the ship before leaping in. I didn't even look back until I had left the atmosphere.

Plus the fact that our own planet isn't "truly spherical", and us humans manage living and breathing and walking and all that here. We don't even need special code from Hello Games for that... :steamhappy:

Ever seen a 3d render of our planet with all the water removed? Looks more or less like any random rock or pebble on the ground. Makes you wonder, hehe...

Didn't know, any links handy?

And yes, as I understand Earth is a little 'pear shaped' with northern hemisphere narrow at the shoulders, and all extra weight heading south, kinda like the rest of us old gamers too long in the chair :D

I'm pretty sure I saw it on some Veritasium, Vsauce or Daily Dose of Internet video ages ago.

But here's one after a quick search on youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0VoJ_zuy7E

The 3d render is shown most clearly from about 30 seconds in, and during the last 30 seconds.

That shape is actually a representation of the gravitational effects on Earth, not an actual render of the Earth's shape.

Info on that here - https://slate.com/technology/2015/09/earth-without-water-nope.html

Just watched the video myself, and yeah, that is not the shape of the earth without water, but still interesting video, thanks for the link!

We dont know how exactly we land on planets, but its deffinetly not like NoManSky or StarCitizen where you freely go through hot atmosphere and fly through clouds. It's gonna have Loading Screen somekind or a cutscene (hidden loading)
But how you pick location nobody knows yet. Is it simmple mouse click or you will have continents you can pick. Planets might have pre-built landing zones so you dont land on tip of mountain or in middle of sea
