The purpose of apparel?
So I am well aware of the buff aspect to apparel, so that is covered. Beyond that it seems like it is supposed to be the cosmetic appearance when in cities and things like that, namely when your partners decide to wear their apparel while you clunk around in whatever armour you happened to be wearing. The items you selected to wear in the apparel aspect, and I am not sure if I just can't find the setting to do that... or if they actually expect you to equip and remove your armour every time you are in a city looking dumb while everyone around you is wearing regular clothing.

Go to the "inventory - Spacesuit" listing, and you'll see a tickbox in the bottom line's first position: "Show Spacesuit in Settlements". Press "T" (default key IIRC) to toggle.

P.S.: AFAIK you still "wear" your suit re. its buffs and protections.
P.P.S.: There's a similar Toggle for "breathable atmosphere" & helmets

There is a mod to hotkey equip armor/helmet. Works fine. Backpacks... are another story.
