I play on Xbox, and I support this idea. Happy to fall on that grenade if it helps clean this place up.
There's always Bethesda's own forums, or Reddit...
I agree wholeheartedly. Steam does in fact have the functionality to only allow users who own a product to be able to post in a forum. Anyone can read it of course.
Sorry to those who don't own it here but there should always be the option to post where you have purchased it.
There are so many users on steam that troll lots of forums only for the purpose of trolling and that has brought all users without the mouse icon into disrepute.
And this is the exact problem... More often than not, they're throw-away sock puppet accounts, made entirely for the purposes of trolling, what's more...
Alternatively to simply restricting access only to game purchasers, restrict the ability to openly post in forums before having purchased a game to accounts that have spent a sufficient amount of total money on games -- perhaps $50 worth -- after which the account can post openly...
There are legitimate reasons to post in forums before owning a game on Steam, such as asking questions not covered in reviews, or even seeking trouble shooting advice when owning on Epic etc, so when wanting some legitimate advice...
By stopping clearly fake accounts of being able to post, by limiting unrestricted posting to accounts with a sufficient number of game purchases, the trolls would all but dry up over night...
Cynically, I can't see Steam doing this as the current limit is just a few dollars, which can be easily reached through trading cards, which Steam take a cut from... So, despite it being literally cents made per sock puppet, it's still cents made per (potentially) millions of sock puppets, so Steam is actually making bank off trolls...
So, for this reason, it's against Steam's best interest to put a stop to trolls, and they could have done so long ago, if they really wanted, simply by putting tighter posting restrictions on new accounts...
Spot on Ruin, my first entry into steam was because I purchased a game from a physical store (might have been EB games) and upon installing the game steam came along for that ride and I had to create an entity on steam for myself (hence my other profile name).
I did not care to look for steam forums till much later and I had purchased other games here.
The forums here should not be the first reason someone has an account on steam.
I have seen other games here have a "owners only" forum along with other forums for non owners so all the questions could be asked and it did allow for a somewhat more civil forum where the game owners could exclusively post. It's up to the "Dev's" to make that choice and given Beth has for a long time had their own platform for that (forums and store) I can understand why they have no interest in monitoring this ... stuff.
Sure, let’s just make this an exclusive club where only the 'true fans' are allowed. I’m sure that’ll solve all the problems and create a utopia of agreement. Let’s just turn this into an echo chamber. Who needs different perspectives when you can bask in the glory of your own opinions.
Because filtering out anyone who disagrees is the best way to have a meaningful conversation. That’s how you build a thriving community....
Purchasers only, which some game devs do here, has nothing to do with like/dislike, it's own/don't, you know, purchasers.
Yeah all his bluster about echo chambers and the implication of trying to silence people is just hyperbole and I do think he would know that.
Like I said, if a dev team makes an 'owners only' forum there would also be an open forum or alternatively those that claim to have used the game just not here could actually go to the place of purchase to discuss the game if at least to avoid the image of being a troll simply because there is no mouse icon the the right of their name when they post here and they can thank the dedicated steam forum trolls for creating that attitude.
ive said something like that in a steam disccusion. and every rude person known got so tirggered by it. i didnr even care to look back. so good luck with that. but your best option is to block. people that have there profile hidden. what i started doing because. how i look at it "You Hide your Steam profile You get blocked simple as that"
