So far I think it's entirely "play the part" while you're in the DLC. Just based on my impressions so far, I think everything to be done in the DLC will not affect the base game in any way besides taking the things you pickup back with you (whenever that is). May not be everyone's cup of tea, but I dig it. Look at it this way, you'll be killing them all before the rest of us eventually do.
Edit: On the matter of the topic at hand, I'm enjoying the dlc thus far. I've only gotten to the main city. and am currently exploring it. But I really like the aesthetic, and find the story quite interesting. A few new weapons have crossed my path, and even though I generally dont use heavy weapons.....ever, that new one(name escapes me) is quite enticing. Overall, so far, despite being space themed, it feels very Elder Scrollsish. Though, again, I'm just in the beginning, so that opinion could change over time.
It's good to find out you don't like something though when you've barely dipped a toe into it, that way you don't jump in, you know? I'm happy for you that you found out you didn't like the DLC less than a hour into it, too bad they don't refund DLC's (or they might? unsure, I haven't been able to do so in the past.)
