In my latest playthrough, they just sit there after I've done everything for them.
If you blow it up, it's gone. No more to the story.
If you have them work as servants they move to the planet into buildings that are already there for the workers. So side quests can continue, but not much else changes.
If you give them a grav drive ... where do they go on each jump? Where to they decide to settle? What does their new settlement look like? A whole lot more goes into the quest design if this option is given, and IMO BGS just didn't have time to finish it and now won't find the time to finish it.
I'm like you I want to use this option as I do believe it's the best for them ... and Sarah agrees with me. BUT, it's bugged, so I can't use this option and yes, it bites.
from my understanding the Constant can show up at random, but you'll not know where until you find them again. Basically the same as how it works with the legendary battleships.
In my first or second run I came across them quite quickly after I had helped them. I received another quest or two from some people there, but after that, they vanished again and I didn't find them again during the remainder of that run.
Which, was more or less the same thing as what I had happen with Camulus. First time it was right there at Porrima (not sure which planet) and I was barely level 25 or so, but I never again found them.
I have not yet ever encountered either the Shroudbringer or whatever the spacer-vessel is called.
The bug is that there is a quest marker at the Paradiso planet, but the ship isn't in orbit. So if the ship is actually 'hiding' somewhere else, then it's a quest marker bug.
I would agree if they fixed this, my personal opinion is a two-faced one
1) Give no quest marker until you find them and then make sure the ship will not jump for some time.
2) [the easy mode] put quest marker on the location where the ship is/will be spawned.
They jump to some other planet in another system. Player finds them, calls them up on the radio. Someone comes on and says "Judy went planetside for (insert reason here) and I'm manning the radio today. Thanks for the free grav-drive! Drop by for a cup of tea any time at all, you are always welcome here".
Story complete, no new animations required, no new voice act... well, no paid voice actors needed, quest removed from list.
Not so hard.
But yeah, I won't be holding my breath either.
