Ultrawide Support (21:9, 32:9, etc.)

----------------------------------------------------------
Good Evening All,

This is an open letter to the developers themselves :)

How Ultrawide Support is PROPERLY Implemented.
SOURCE: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Glossary:Scaling

PROPER implementation of this support stretches the viewable area as large as possible while maintaining aspect ratio, then increases the field of view to fit the screen resolution, allowing more of the game world to be visible. Some games may only increase the field of view horizontally (Hor+) or vertically (Vert+). The most optimal, and preferred, scaling behaviors are Expand Aspect Ratio (Hor+/Vert+) for modern high definition games, and Pixel-perfect for games that focus on lower resolutions or retro-based art styles.

With proper implementation, a game designed for 16:9 will show more of the game world when played on a 21:9 (Hor+) monitor without losing any of the “reference” field of view it would have on a 16:9 monitor.

Atleast *4,800,000* (4.00%) of All Steam users are on an Ultrawide screen resolution.
SOURCE: https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

That's more people using Ultrawide (monitors) than those who are on 4K (monitors).
I myself own a 3440x1440 monitor and unfortunately many developers have flat-out not supported these ratios (21:9, 32:9) either at all or as a badly implemented after-thought. My question - Could the Dev team PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE implement full *NATIVE* Ultrawide Monitor support and everything that entails (User Interface, etc.)?

So many Ultrawide users in the community feel like they are either an afterthought or not considered part of the target audience.

With so many games being developed to the typical 1920x1080 / 16:9 and all others depending on a code-savvy member of the community to "FIX" this oversight for the rest of the community, it is very frustrating to see the same old problem surfacing in NEW games.

Ultrawide monitor ratios have been supported for over 17 years already.

It's time to get serious about this. Half-Life 2 (2004) had full native support for all monitor ratios and ultrawide screen resolutions. This has been supported for over 17 years already from both big-budget studios and even tiny, 3-person development teams over the last 2 decades. It was supported natively, even back in an era when 1080p wasn't the common resolution for the masses.

Myself and MANY other people would be grateful to you all if you provided full NATIVE support for other monitor ratios besides the common 16:9 ratio. Your games would LITERALLY reach a wider audience. There is truly no reason Ultrawide screen support should ever be unaccounted-for in a game's development cycle, especially when it directly results in a loss of profit by excluding a VIABLE audience willing to pay for your product. Thank you so much for your time

Very Respectfully,

Hopefully it's not a post-launch update again (Fallout 76).

For real — I expect Bethesda's newest (almost 2023) release to have this as standard. I just want to put pressure on them to do it, anyways.

Its 2022 and still sometimes have to ask for proper fullscreen ultrawide support *sad*
they will support it

It is a Bethesda game. It will take a year of patches and mods to make it playable, until then UW will be no issue.

Is this game still made on their ancient engine or did they finally invest some money and made a new one?

I sincerely hope so. It would be nice to just open up the game and it worsk fully on Launch. I'm ok with patches to improve the game, just not ok when over 10 patches later, the game still doesn't support ultrawide /UGH.

Yea I know the drill... and they (This is only what I believe has happened so far) have been upgrading the same engine internally, so imagine an engine getting different parts replaced with better quality, better performance, better reliability, etc. and that engine currently looks almost nothing like the original on account of the fact it has been built-upon and upgraded massively to the point the old 4-cylinder is now an 8-cylinder engine with upgraded everything, and computer included. Fallout 76 looks GREAT (compared to Fallout 4/3/NV), but I do hope they went ALL-OUT on Starfield's upgrades (engine-wise).

it's simple, add ultrawide support, please.

The game is being made with Creation Engine 2, which seems like it's more or less a refurbished version of their original engine but I doubt it will be that much different functionality wise although it might have generally better performance due to taking better advantage of modern hardware.

I think we need to create some more noise on this thread guys (like the Elden Ring thread). Bethesda needs to SEE that we UW players REALLY want to see and experience the game with the FULL usage of our monitors. The chances are higher on this thread than the 5,000+ commented same thread for Elden Ring. This game releases near the end of 2022, I want them to fully support 21:9 and 32:9 aspect ratios finally.

Does the XboxX natively support ultrawide? If it does, then Starfield will have Ultrawide support, if not, it probably won't at launch.

Tangentially, Starfield will probably have HDR support for that reason.

I myself plan on getting the Alienware AW3423DW for Starfield, so I would definitely like the Ultra-wide support, but I'm not hopeful.

Bethesda developed games have never had native ultrawide support. I'm not expecting this to either, when theres no excuse not to by now.

Yea I have never seen a Bethesda game have it (except Fallout 76 after patches), but I really want that to change with Starfield. I don't want to have to mod it in, patch after patch. I want this to be native.

Good call out OP
+! to ultrawide support

pfff - catering to one niche beyond the console crowd is silly from a business standpoint; if ultrawide is the de facto norm for whatever console(s) then it would make more sense

5 million potential customers for an hour, maybe two of work isn't worth it? One time endeavor too which would benefitted all future and previous Bethesda games on PC if they had done it sooner. Don't quit your day job if that's any showcase of your business sense.
