Exhuming the Past questions (spoilers!)
A bit confused by the DLC Exhuming the Past quest. There's a choice near the end that has big consequences. But it was never presented to me in the game as a choice, or as just a trivial minor choice. After checking a couple wikis (not too helpful as the dlc is too new), I'm still a bit confused if I hit a bug or there's an order of doing things that matters.

In particular, it was not indicated in the game that there might be a negative consequence, morally, ethically, or technically, with doing the (optional) retrieve the remaining vortex interlock. Many quests have an (optional) component. No text in the game indicated something bad might happen if I went above and beyond the minimum collect only 1 interlock instead of getting all of the interlocks for a better result.

Checking one wiki it did seem to indicate that someone should have appeared and told me that that something bad might happen. That is, the phantoms who never listen to reason and who always fight might actually give some actual information and that I can just leave instead of killing more of them.

So what I'm confused about here. Is this a bug/glitch? Or, is it because I did something out of order (I chose the interlock to take that was tied to the phantom that speaks, and choosing the other one would have been better). Note that I did NOT use the quest markers, and I don't have a save/autosave from before the decision point.

It sounds like either a bug/glitch or you dismissed the dialog very quickly ...which is very easy to do at a couple of points during this mission.

It is really clearly expressed to you, spelled out in the dialog what the consequences will be for collecting the remaining interlock, before you get the chance to do it.

Actually I reloaded and replayed earlier the last fight, past the security door, and tried all the dialogue options but nothing changed. All I ever got was "(optonal) collect remaining interlock", but no NPC or enemy appeared, though a body did drop out of nowhere as expected. But since that time I finished the quest and returned town and quicksaved, getting rid of a convenient way to retry it.

Oh that quest, I got the npc warning me. But me being a dumb dumb didn't initially fully understand what the npc was talking about.

Regreated my choices later when I saw what had happened outside.
Well, I don't know either :)
I had Andreja with me and had removed both devices. Andreja said to me: ‘I don't know if that was right’
That unsettled me *lol* and I reloaded a savegame I had just made.
But later I thought: You should have just carried on playing. These phantoms should all be destroyed.
Because if you leave the 2nd interlock in, the phantoms survive in the facility.

Next time I will remove both, no matter what Andreja says...

I've just realised, I took an option with a [special projects] check on it in that dialog. Is it possible the other dialog paths are less clear?

I removed every [redacted] and killed all four [redacted] because nobody tries to [redacted] and lives to tell the tale, nobody. Yes, I was asked not to do that. Duly noted and disregarded (no regrets whatsoever, will do the same again).

That thread is a lie, there is no agency or player choices in starfield. Choices in rpgs are intellectual property of larian and only exist in bg3
