I'm not even a gun expert, but I know enough to know the ammunition is all wrong in Starfield...
There are multiple weapons that use the same calibres which, in reality, would use wildly different ammunition, even if the round itself was nominally the same size, they'd use a different cartridge size, etc...
The 6.5mm being used by a carbine rifle and a machine pistol...
Or the 7.77mm being used by a rifle, two SMG's and a pistol...
In each of these examples, the SMG and pistols would absolutely be a different cartridge to the rifles, even if nominally the same sized bullet used across multiple weapons itself...
Weapons surely can use the Same Ammo. It's the question for what they designed it. There is a Gun called "Windbüchse" with a Air Reservoir for early sharpshooters.... You can build a SMG with 9mm. Longer Barrel=more range more accuracy but the Ammo is the same. Gamers often think that the weapon gives this things :).
A 9mm Luger RIfle will have more range and better accuracy then a Pistol. But the Weapon will not be good. It's too long and big for this small Ammo so they don't make it. But when you take .22lr you find Rifles with scopes, Pistols, Revolver nearly everything. Cause .22lr is cheap. Normal People use this ammo for hunting, Sports, self defense or shoot rats in the basement :p. .22lr costs 13 Cent. )mm Luger nearly 40......
When it's cheap they make really crazy things. Expensive ones will be specializied....
That's the thing... We're not talking air rifles, and what are little more than a step or two up from BB guns here... We're talking military spec weapons...
Sure, the SMG and pistol may share the same cartridge, because that is often the case, however, proper high powered rifles will NOT use a pistol cartridge as they are simply not powerful enough...
So, yes, it's believable that the same size bullet is being used for ease of manufacture, but rifles would be using their own rifle cartridge for the increased power, not a smaller pistol cartridge...
i dunno i thought the military used standarize bullet size for all their gunz
No... What usually happens is that allied militaries will adopt a standard round, such as the 5.56x45mm ammunition being the standardised NATO rifle round, so that during a conflict, all allied troops can use that same ammunition, even if using different weapons as each of their weapons will have been designed with that round in mind...
9x19mm is the standardised NATO pistol round...
You are not going to see pistols firing rifle rounds, and vice-versa...
As I said before, even if we assume the smaller calibres are being used as both rifle and pistol bullets in Starfield, just for the ease of manufacture, the rifle version would have a larger cartridge containing more propellent, making it a more powerful cartridge over the pistol cartridge, and thus they would be different sized cartridges, and not compatible with both rifles, and pistols/SMG's...
thats what i mean , IRL they got 1 ammo for pistole , 1 type for rifle , 1 type for shotgun.. not multiple type for single weapon type
Ummm... Well... Now that you mention it... You absolutely can get different ammunition types for the same weapon, that vary in everything from power due to the amount and type of propellent, to the type of bullet itself, and so on...
Militaries tend to keep it simple and keep everything mostly standardised...
But there would have been nothing stopping Bethesda introducing amour piercing or even explosive, and incendiary rounds etc, as ammunition options, as such ammunition already exists today for various weapons...
They could have also introduced more futuristic ammunition types, such as EMP rounds, without it being out of place...
Instead, they just added such ammunition to weapon upgrades, rather than allowing you to change the ammo on the fly...
You would be wrong to think that. Most guns will have a variety of ammo they can fire, different uses.
Shotguns have multiple rounds; Hatton (hinge remover), buckshot, AP, CS Gas etc.. That's 4 types i can think of right now, and im no means a armament expert......
