Edit: Oh and you can have them manage your outposts too.
Edit 2: Oh and you can romance them for extra story missions which unlocks a nice rested xp buff when you sleep.
Edit 3: Having to search for some of the companions is quite a cool idea, you need to check settlements, look in the local bars etc for potential recruits.
Their point is to aid you in combat and are sworn to carry your burdens.
Their non combat stuff is just an extra perk on top of that.
"Lydia liked that"
I take you refer to "crew" NPCs.
They add bonuses to your ship's stats and weapons if they have the corresponding skill.
IE : Sam Coe has piloting rank 4 and will boost the speed of you ship (quite a lot). He also has payload rank 2 which increases your ships cargo capacity.
Crew skills bonuses stack with your character's skills but if you have multiple crew npcs with the same skill only the highest crew skill will be taken into account (IE if you have Omari (shileds 3) and vasco (shields 2), only the shield bonus from Omari will be added.
Here is an example of an optimized crew : (some NPCs can be replaced by others that have the same skill)
Sam Coe (piloting, payloads)
Omari Hassan (shields)
Vasco (aneutronic fusion)
Barett (particle beam weapons)
Sara morgan (astrodynamics)
Lastly if you have the "taskmaster" trait, broken systems on your ship have a chance to be repaired immediately if you have a crew npc with the corresponding skill.
If she died, there should be a chest in the lodge with your loot. Basement, I believe.
If she dies you can find her stuff in the lodge afterwards
This is not a game perk by any means honestly. Exp is as easy as playing honestly. Well it was when I played at launch.
I can get this by turning off my cpu and fiddling with my wife. And I get a good meal after.
Good Day
Some of them also can make outposts do better, but its marginal because outposts are marginal.
Past that, their primary functions include always sleeping in your bed, running in front of your sniper shots, and ensuring that you can't stealth well.
Divorce sucks doesn't it?
I see you haven't played the game much or haven't payed much attention while playing it.
For ship's crew, the crew skills are different from player skills of the same name:
Barrett has Starship Engineering 4 which increases ship repair time by 20% and has Particle Beam Weapon Systems 3 which adds 15% ship particle beam damage and 15% faster recharge time.
Sam has Piloting 4 which increases top ship speed by 30% and Payloads 2 which adds 20% more capacity to your total cargo space.
Sarah has Astrodynamics 4 which makes grav jump calculations 30% faster and Leadership which means she doesn't count towards your crew maximum.
Vasco has Aneutronic Fusion 1 which adds an extra point to your reactor power and Shield Systems 2 which increases shields by 20%. Andromeda Kepler also has this Aneutronic Fusion skill at level 1. They are the only available crew with it.
Andreja has Energy Weapons 2 which gives 20% more ship energy weapons damage and 20% faster recharge times.
There are other available companions/crew,but none are as good as the Constellation people. If you have a crew with Barrett, Sam, Sarah, Andreja and Vasco on your ship, then you have the best available and they don't have recruiting costs.
All of those available as companions wiil follow you. And there is no secret to having Andreja as a companion. She becomes available early in the main quest line and in NG+ if you skip the main quest, she appears in the Lodge.
Omari Hassan has Shield Systems II and Starship Engineering 2. Vasco has the same shield skill and level and Barrett has better engineer skill and they don't have hiring costs.
