What does the companion ALLY status do?

I just ranked my last companion, Sam, to Ally status, but I've yet to see what this actually does. I know Sam gives me an Explorers hat, forgot what the rest did, but what else does it do? I know that if you romance a companion you get an XP boost, but not sure what Ally status does.

To my knowledge, it does nothing. Not like FO4, where you get a perk. Unless you are going to romance one, the affinity system has no point. : |

A companion on your ship as well as others gives your ship boosts, in storage (Sam) Sarah I believe less fuel for travel, VASCO gives particle beams more damage and shield protection. They don't have to be companions just crew.

'Ally' status just means you completed their personal questline and it opens up full romance options instead of just flirts. And Sam gives you a hat.

Its very awkward taking the romance option after the hat scene. Sam tells you you're the most important person in his life. Um, you know you have a daughter, right?

Did the other characters give you anything or is it just Sam that gives you a hat? I only noticed a reward after him, so no idea if any of the other characters gave me anything. Would like to avoid accidentally selling any unique gear.

Side note, the “hoarder” side of me is disappointed I didn’t get to keep the plant in Barrits quest.

Right .. Ally means you can choose between Friendship and Romance for that character.
