You are not the only one, if your issue is what was described and answered below:

I hope that helps anyone who runs into the same issue I had (which was a missing reference to some LOD files).

And if you do not have that line in your StarfieldCustom.ini, copy it and place it under under [Archive]

That apparently worked for those individuals who had that issue.

Good luck!

I do not have any of the folders/files mentioned above. i have repaired my game files and still do not have them. There is no starfield data in my documents or games folder. It is also not under "OneDrive/Documents" I legitimately cannot find where these files are supposed to be so i cannot edit them.

Hi OP. if you don't have the files/folders mentioned in my original posts, it is ok to create them. If you go to your "Documents" folder in your user profile and look for a folder called "my games" if it isn't there you can create it. inside that folder (if it exists) there should be a folder called "Starfield" if that does not exist, create that one too. In the "Starfield" folder there should be a "StarfieldCustom.ini" if that is not there, create an empty text file with that name in that folder. Then edit the file and add the following line(s) to it:

[Archive] sResourceIndexFileList=Starfield - LODTextures.ba2, Starfield - LODTextures01.ba2, Starfield - LODTextures02.ba2, Starfield - Textures01.ba2, Starfield - Textures02.ba2, Starfield - Textures03.ba2, Starfield - Textures04.ba2, Starfield - Textures05.ba2, Starfield - Textures06.ba2, Starfield - Textures07.ba2, Starfield - Textures08.ba2, Starfield - Textures09.ba2, Starfield - Textures10.ba2, Starfield - Textures11.ba2, Starfield - TexturesPatch.ba2

If you do find that the file exists, add only the entire line starting with "sResourceIndexFileList" under the [Archive] header.

I hope this helps get you sorted.

edit: This 'fix' assumes that you are on Windows. If you are on Linux those files might be a bit harder to find. They will live under the wine prefix setup by proton. (google might be more help to you in that case.)

Just to clarify, Should I copy+paste that as one continuous line as it is shown here? Or should I add them each as individual lines under the [Archive] line? Wondering if this was the reason it didn't work. Currently reinstalling the game (8 hrs) so i must wait to try.
smr1957 Jul 4, 2024 @ 7:16pm
Copy and paste it as shown.

Good luck, again!

It does not work for me. Thanks anyway.

I'm sorry that I wasn't more clear; that should be one continuous line under the archive header without any line breaks. Also, copy and paste that line directly from the default ini file in starfield's game directory as the references may be different with updates or locality (not sure on this, just to be safe).

I am also wondering if your documents folder did not contain the 'my games/starfield' folder with your ini files and saves because they were created somewhere else on your system. To see if that is the case, try to search your system using explorer for the starfield folder and work from there to find where those files are being kept. If they are being kept elsewhere, then that is why this 'fix' might not work (the custom ini file you created is being ignored or overridden by the one the game created).

Fingers crossed!

I found StarfieldCustom.ini on my F: drive. The Game installation is on my C: drive.
I copied the line starting with "sResourceIndexFileList=" from "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Starfield\Starfield.ini" and pasted it over the corrosponding line in "F:\Documents\My Games\Starfield\StarfieldCustom.ini" but this did not solve the issue.

Just so there is no confusion, I deleted any files that I personally created in efforts to fix this as they did not help. All of the files mentioned here were created by the game.
Thank you for trying to help and I hope i am understanding your instructions properly.

Here is the line copied from the default .ini file:
"sResourceIndexFileList=Starfield - LODTextures.ba2, Starfield - LODTextures01.ba2, Starfield - LODTextures02.ba2, Starfield - Textures01.ba2, Starfield - Textures02.ba2, Starfield - Textures03.ba2, Starfield - Textures04.ba2, Starfield - Textures05.ba2, Starfield - Textures06.ba2, Starfield - Textures07.ba2, Starfield - Textures08.ba2, Starfield - Textures09.ba2, Starfield - Textures10.ba2, Starfield - Textures11.ba2, Starfield - TexturesPatch.ba2"
I pasted that over the same line in StarfieldCustom.ini, saved the file, and opened the game. The crane and structure in Cydonia are still glowing.
Ceredh Jul 14, 2024 @ 11:18pm
I don't know wether the missing textures at Cydonia are linked to the lines in the custom.ini. I had the problem during the end of my first playthrough, and I had those lines in my custom.ini. I also had added and removed mods during the playthrough because Starfield seemed so stable and robust first, contrary to other Beth games. In den end I got corrupted saves which did not load.

I made a clean reinstall (which includes manually removing any folder related to the game) and started a new game, without the mentioned lines in the custom. ini, and despite this I did not have any problems with the textures of the crane or the other building in the background of Cydonia since then. I also didn't have any other stability problems with Starfield.

BTW do it as in other Beth games, do not remove mods with .esm/.esp files, and try to change the load order as little as possible.

That all looks right to me.. damn. I'm not sure what might be causing this now (or if there are multiple causes). It's good practice to immediately revert any changes made to ini files, if they did not help. I'll keep my eye out for any news on this issue and post back here if I see anything useful. Sorry that this didn't work out for you.

Yes! This is good advice, for sure. If you modify your load order or uninstall mods, it is always best to start a new character and make a new save.

Didn't know about the thing with the mods. I've been installing and uninstalling them on a whim to try them all out so this might be a cause. Hope you can find the issue eventually. Good luck, and thanks again for helping ppl with this.
smr1957 Jul 15, 2024 @ 11:09am
Just a note - Modifying the load order does not require starting fresh, as the game automatically adjusts to changes; nor does adding a mod require a new game, unless the mod author specifically states otherwise.

But, removing any plugin mod or any mod other than one that is purely texture/meshes or vanilla assets or spawns will cause issues, as the data remains baked into the save and cannot be removed.

look in your data folder for a mod wich came with its own ini, so just search for .ini and delete the SResourceIndexFileList= with everything behind it and its gone
for me it was bards_zerooutpostcost and custom dynamic weather

This is the way. I had three mods that were generating ini files that were not in the original package. For whatever reason, the mods appear to be adding a near-complete copy of the StarfieldCustom.ini file. The key difference is that they were missing entries for Starfield - LODTextures01.ba2 and Starfield - LODTextures02.ba2. I added those two back (in all three mods) and the glowing cranes went away. I'll probably need to do it again for any ini files that appear in my overwrite folder later.
