J on Keyboard. Not sure on Controller. Be in Shipbuilder Mode and not Upgrade Mode to be sure.

Left stick down, on Xbox controller.

Thank you all.

I will just say that I wish the UI was much better for this. I've given up on trying as I end up leaving the game and going to YouTube tutorials just to figure out how painting works.

Something simple I would like to see is an option to just select the whole ship, set a color, and then go back and select other pieces to change to add some character to the paint job, and be able to copy that exact extra color to each piece I want to make different. The problem is, to those familiar enough with the interface, this is probably easy to do. But I can't figure it out with the in game instructions (or lack thereof) given. So I've just given up on painting.

The game has a bunch of holes in it - developers themselves said: They had to abandon aspects of the game until a later time; to make the release date.

There is an option to select the whole ship and paint it, using Xbox controller; its left bumper.
For keyboard, someone else will have to chime in.

Selecting the whole ship is just double mouseclick.

This is also useful for making sure all pieces are connected. If they don't highlight with this method they don't connect. You can grab and pull the connected pieces to have a clear view where the problem is.

At the bottom of the ship builder menu selections when you have a modular selected, it literally tells you that J is the color key.

Many parts have up to three different color slots, so you need to select which slot you want for the color you've chosen. if you want all one color just select each one and then select the color on the used colors you want. I usually set up three different colors then select them on the bottom row of used colors to vary colors where I want.
