Dream House Insurance
I read that I could purchase insurance so that the contents of the Dream House (from the corresponding trait) remain in NG+. However, I can't find where to do that.
The house is paid off.
Also, will that remain, or does one have to purchase insurance every NG+ as well?

I think what you read was maybe a player suggestion for what they felt should be included in the game. When you go to NG+ EVERYTHING resets (except your level, skills and any Starborn Powers you've acquired)

Money, properties, equipment, relationships are all set back to zero, so either dont NG+ or be prepared for the result.

I know everything resets, which is why I was happy about the insurance idea. I guess I misunderstood that then. Too bad. So the dream home isn't really worth it, too much effort for too little gain to do that over and over.
I wonder why everyone says it's one of the best traits.

If you're a builder type of player, it's probably best to first do NG+ until you find a universe that's most to your liking (or use console commands to force the universe you want), then stick with that universe to do your building of homes, outposts, etc.

Find a universe to my liking? How are the universes in NG+ different?

Mostly, it affects the lodge and the NPCs there.

I haven't really noticed any difference, aside from some extra "Starborn" dialog options. And I think some mission related locations may move (at least I don't remember the families in the "failure to communicate mission" being all clustered around one gas giant, but that may be my memory failing me).
Well, maybe that's because I decided to not skip the quest line.

It's a decorator's paradise really and I think it boasts the most amount of space for a player home. it's also a player home you start off with rather than waiting through a whole questline but personally I find the Mercury penthouse to be better. It's all subjective though about the worth.

Well, I never really used it. It doesn't DO anything. The only useful thing are workbenches. But I usually just use the ones at the Lodge, and once I have enough money, I build my own ship which always has a workshop. Sure, decoration is nice, and I enjoy doing it. But not if it keeps disappearing. I was so proud of finding some really rare decorative items (a sundial for example, not those desktop ones you find all the time, one that I have never seen again).

Why do you even consider NG+ if you feel so attached to your collection and seem not to appreciate the potential benefit of NG+?

As someone who reached NG+10 with different characters, allow me to explain why a player may choose to do so.
One of the prominent features in this game is Starborn Powers. If you are not interested in them, never use them, hate Temples, prefer just build and decorate or simply don’t intend to play the game longer that it takes to complete the main quest and maybe a couple of faction questlines then don’t bother with NG+. You will be happier in your original universe.

In each NG+ you can upgrade your powers, eventually to lvl 10. These powers become much stronger, last much longer. With upgraded powers you can collect vast amounts of minerals and organics just by pressing Z while you walk, have a SILENT companion who is as strong as yourself, become invisible to your enemies for a significant period of time, use powers as weapons of mass destruction etc. In other words, you can play as a Space Wizard as opposed to a generic shooter.

Also, every time you do Ryujin questline your manipulation skill upgrades, up to lvl 4, without your spending a single skill point.

In NG+ you may see a different Lodge. If you dislike the Constellation folks and have no interest in “relationships” then you may want to choose a universe with them all dead. I played in those universes. Once I met my good old friend The Hunter in the Lodge who gave me the Artifacts and left, another time I met Andreja and her zealots who gave me the artifacts and did not bother me afterwards. You can even meet yourself.

And the best part is you can roleplay a different character and join different factions without losing progress (skills, powers etc.).

As for the unique items and collections, they are not randomly generated so you can collect the same things in the same locations in every Universe.

I personally enjoyed the universe where I met multiple version of myself at the lodge. :D That was rather unique.

I was only thinking it's too much effort to decorate it over and over again. When I choose the trait, I thought I'd get some special benefits from it. If it was an outpost with a shipbuilder and stuff, or provided some unique stuff you don't get anywhere else. Instead it's just some fancy looking bunker.
You could just as well move into Vlad's villa Can't decorate it, but it comes pre-decorated. And at least the items there don't start clipping through surfaces. :)

And I'm doing NG+ because of the upgrades you get, and to try out different paths. Also, didn't know that the universes can actually be different. Another reason then.

If you are able to mod there is a really great one called Dream Home Add Ons, It lets you put a Trade Authority kiosk in the home that takes contraband and installs a wall-mounted Stroud shipbuilding kiosk inside. The area outside the house has been updated for Class C ships. This doesn't help you with carry-over, but it does add a lot of functionality to the Dream Home. The mod also provides an unlimited storage box you activate by putting on a Stroud ballcap and is accessible from anywhere.

I think once modding comes to all platforms and the creation kit is out we'll see a LOT of functionality added to the Dream Home.

Interesting idea. I actually think a personal pocket-dimension would be an *amazing* addition with the Shattered Space dlc. I don't think we'll get it, but it would be nice to have the ability to carry over 1 item (per NG+), so on the 10th run, heading into the 11th, you could take 10 things with you. That way you could bring your favorite item from each run.

Not that it would help me (or others) who have already mastered their Powers.
