Like StormhawkV said you need to upgrade your reactor.
Add better shields to your ship.
You should also Rank up your Piloting skill.
Rank up Starship Design
Also once you hit character level 60 you unlock all modules that are tied to character level, I think another milestone before that is level 39 iirc.
Also some quests unlock better modules as well.
It's a good challenge, sometimes depending of your ship (class, upgrades, skills, etc) and your character's level and the level of the system you're in.
I have encountered very difficult combats (1 versus 4), at low level with the Frontier (with basic upgrades.
Killing a first target is very hard but it's the key. One at a time, you must find a way to do it.
Using the "turbo", using repair kits at the right time, it's a learning process ... .
This is underrated advice that IMO isn't explained by the game properly.
Certain parts need a reactor of a certain level, but simultaneously parts including reactors, are limited by your level. I couldn't work out what I was doing wrong with ships for a long time, parts people would casually mention as best/better just didn't show up.
I've since put a lot of data into a local file that I can filter on level/class and value (like Cargo/Mass rating), but this web page is a great resource if you're wondering which parts to look for at various levels (Vlad may even have been the one to point me to it, I'm not sure lol)

And this as well :D
The initial UC Vanguard mission is great to unlock a good shield and weapon option early on.
- take 4 points in shield systems
- crew the ship with shield specialists or whatever you can find for that skill?? I ignore crew, so I can't say whats out there?
- add extra parts to increase hull capacity
- use your ship parts in combat to repair as you go. Every time you save people get ship parts, and loot hulks after combat for more too. They are heavy, but its nice to repair your hull as it takes damage
That is about it. Pilot so you get hit less, don't just fly in a straight line.
Don't get me wrong i do a ton of exploring in this game but Bethesda made this game a tad more quest dependent, just a tad.
And you can add Walter's Overdesigned quest to that list.
I think the community is already polarized enough.
