PARTIALLY FIXED -- Game ALWAYS crashes at the start
I got the game (and a fresh pc) yesterday and well...every time they open the cave system, the game crashes. Could avoide it once by looking to the ground at this moment, but then it crashes when you get the pad to start character creation. Got a "Graphice Driver Timeout" popup from AMD Adrenaline.

There are may ppl with this problem, but i can only find posts (eg reddit) from 6 months ago - so i think maybe the problem was solved? Got latest driver update, clean sweep, reinstallation, tried older drivers, even reinstallation of the game and at last a reinstallation of windows didnt fix it. Turning every rendering option off, minimum graphics, ... nothing works. Maybe someone here knows this problem and has a solution?

Running the game on win11, radeon rx 7700xt, with aryzen7 7800x3d

Maybe someone knows something, i would appreciate it since i'm looking forward to play the game finally :/

EDIT:
Hey there, wanted to share some progress:
With the Nexus Mod "Crash fix for constant CTDs for slow PCs" - it works! I can complete the first cave and start the character creation!!
Sadly, the game now crashes every 2nd time i open the inventory :/ but hey i finally was able to see charakter creation (omg how cool are traits like Kids Stuff :D)

Some things to check:

DirectX Issues: If your PC does not have the accurate DirectX configuration files, it might not be able to run AAA Titles like Starfield. In that case, installing DirectX is the best option.

Visual C++ Redistributable Issue: If Visual C++ Redistributable is not installed, there can be multiple problems. This issue stands as a major problem if you haven’t played games on your PC earlier.

what's clean sweep ?
driver time out could be too high overclock, poorly setup pc, poor or failing psu, having more than one monitor connected running at different frequencies, using enhanced vsycn , trying to run the game beyond what it's capable of, if you re-installed windows tdid you re-install chipset drivers ?
the problem is somewhere in your system, you should be able to run the game med-high setting, you could have a 3rd party program running that conflicts , could be streaming settings , the games stable and runs rock solid

Hey, thanks for your quick answers!

DirectX and Visual C++ Runtimes are installed. Other AAA titles work fine, its just starfield :/

@pike: i meant that i uninstalled all graphics drivers first before installing a new one, but since i also re-installed windows, old drivers should not be the problem.

i'm using one monitor, and also tried to disable all sync functions with no effect.
On low graphics, AMD Adrenaline shows me over 150 FPS and 30-50% gpu usage before the game crashes, so the system should be able to handle the game as you said.

re-installing chipset drivers: shoud you do that manually? i used the identification software from the AMD website and thought it youd install just everything it needs? did i miss something here?

3rd party programs (except for stream) aren't even installed on the pc :/

Thank you for taking the time!

driver wise 24.1.1 is the latest for the 7700, install the chipset drivers via amd download drivers,
in amd cp for the what do you have turned on for starfield ?
what are your display settings in the games settings ?
how much ram do you have ? and is smart access memory on ?
"3rd party programs (except for stream) aren't even installed on the pc :/"

Hey,
yes its 24.1.1., chipset drivers are installed via amd download.
in th Adrenaline control panel i tried everything - everything turned off, everything on, no enhanced sync, ... whatever i choose, it makes no difference.
ingame, i tried borderless window, windwo with 2560x1440 (16:9) and other window sizes, upscaling on/off, vsync on/off, dynamic resolution on/off, VRS on/off, low medium and ultra presets, ...
and sorry i meant STEAM :)
i now tried a mod that removes shadows and GTAO, and with this i got 30 seconds more ingame time - and then it crashes :(

Not sure if you've tried this yet, but have you used the verify files feature on steam? You could be missing some files, possibly.

Hope you get it fixed soon.

dont ad mods till you get the game up and running , if you have any mods installed remove them till you get the game working , if you had mods installed before that could be your problem
is it a tv or a monitor ?
what refresh rate , whats the native res ? what frequency ?
how much ram do you have ? and the game is on an ssd right ?

Damn. It could be anything really. I assume you don't have any mods for starfield which could be causing issues. Are you 100% sure you have all the correct drivers for your hardware? Your motherboard as well.

Weird coincidence you mentioned mods now because I just installed a mod that caused a crash issue. Game wouldn't start. Disabled mod and now it works again. The lesson is don't make too many changes at one time. I knew exactly what to rollback in order to get the game working again.

hey, just tried this mod as a solution, but it didnt work, so i removed it & freshly installed the game again. there were no other mods. drivers are all up to date, its a freshly bought pc and i updated it completely before starting to play games.
i got 32gb ram, a pc monitor ViewSonic VX3211-2K Series, running in 2560 x 1440 @60Hz but i also tried different resolutions.
and yes it's on a ssd of course.

Since i always get a "Driver Timeout" Popup i always thought it would be a driver issue.
Man that DRIVEs me crazy :)

You could try clearing the AMD shader cache in the Adrenaline application.
Bob9000 Feb 16, 2024 @ 1:26am
hey, yes other games run very well, just played Cyberpunk in Ultra etc. I will try clearing the shader cache but since i completely formated the whole drive and gave it a fresh installation of windows, drivers and game, i can't imagine the probleme here. but i will give it a try, thanks!
