Manually installing a mod is a bit tedious. Unless you are using fewer mods it's doable.
I am currently using Nexus Vortex w/ Gamepass it still work but I cannot use any mods that required SKSE.
W/ Starfield, Bethesda doesn't fully support official mods so you gonna use some third party script in order for you to allow to mod.
You are required to have this:
Plugins.txt Enabler

If you are using Nexus Vortex just allow Vortex to manage your mod load order. Vortex will likely tell you to install that mod but don't install any third party ASI Ultimate loader which is recommend by Plugins.txt Enabler. Nexus Vortex has it's own ASI Ultimate Loader if you allow Nexus Vortex to manage your mod loader. Also you really need to make Vortex to manage your loader order and use Vortex Ultimate ASI loader due Vortex will not likely activate your mods if you manually manage your load order.
You know your mods working if your save file telling you if you use mods if will deactivate achivement.
There are bunch of mods in Nexus that are Achievement enabler. Just be warn this Achievement enabler mod is outdated
